I currently tow with a 2009 Volvo V70 2.4 Automatic but I am looking to change tow cars. My son has an Outlander PHEV which he doesn't tow with and has suggested I get one. He hasn't got a tow bar so I can't borrow his to try it out. I was wondering if anyone uses one for towing and how they find it, I would probably be looking to buy a 2014 car. My van is a Pegasus Brindisi.

I would be grateful for any comments.

I was next to some one with a PHEV and he seemed ok with it said he got about 20 miles on Batt before engine cut in,  to keep him going and recharge batt,  he said worked out at about 50mpg towing,,but was not looking forward to batt replacement costs

The Outlander PHEV has a maximum towing weight of 1500kg's and even the dealers suggest the diesel is better for towing. 50mpg? Over what distance? I think the maths behind that figure is rather suspect......

The PHEV suits us as both a towcar and for around town. Around town, we rarely use any petrol, charging everynight.

As a towcar, it's not great. Stable, comfortable and practical yes. But the battery runs flat quickly and it's not very economical on petrol whilst towing. It has a small tank too, so frequent stops if going any distance. It will pull 1500kg reasonably easily, but the engine is noisy and has to work hard on hills.

Totally unacceptable !  The Outlander in Diesel form is OK if a bit underpowered, but the PHEV is useless for long range heavy van work!

Until the new breed of engines are properly developed they are simply no competition for the big V6 & V8 Diesels!

I have read this morning that Volvo are not going to develop more diesel engines as the cost for anything above their current range will be too high

They didn't quite say that, it was qualified. At the moment and as usual the headlines and politicians are getting in the way of the facts. Once again this weeks Auticar magazine has a very good and balanced article about the issue of diesel particUlate emissions.
