Just a thought, looking at buying a Range Rover L322 ['04-'09] & thought about a 4.4 V8 petrol then convert to LPG, seems you can buy a V8 cheaper than a diesel. LPG conversions range from £1500-£2000. Has anyone got any advice on this.........does she run hotter?............less mpg? Your thoughts much appreciated.

Not personally, but have a friend that's towed here there & everywhere, including France, with his LPG converted 3.2 V6 Omega. No problems at all. You're going to get less mpg, but the fuel is cheaper so you do gain. Do your homework though on who might do the conversion ... some are somewhat better than others

Around 1975 I had a 2 Lt Ford Cortina converted to LPG, which also retained the petrol supply so I could do a direct comparison by switching between fuels as I drove along. My company was considering converting all their cars hence the trial.

Using LPG the power was reduced to the extent that I switched to petrol in hilly terrain or when overtaking being a bit of boy racer at the time. I never noticed any heating problems. However I guess that if you started off with power to spare then the loss would not matter too much; I image that 4.4 Lt counts as power to spare.

I would be considering range and refuelling points rather than raw power for a caravan tug.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

ive got an X5 3.0d at present & just fancy a RR Vogue, the diesel versions are about in their hundreds but mostly high mileage.

it was just a one off thought of buying a V8 petrol & converting.

i haven't done the maths, any replacement would do minimal miles whatever, as she's only used as a second vehicle.

Yes, we have had two tow cars dual fuelled petrol/LPG. First one was a Jeep Cherokee 4.0, we towed thousands of miles with that, in all types of weather, all types of terrain. No problems whatsoever, excellent mpg, which more than doubled given that LPG was a third the price of petrol at the time. It was a fully automated system, started on petrol, then switched to LPG within a mile or so. Switched back automatically if LPG tank was emptied. We had no problems finding Fill up points, as we were given a full updated booklet and regular updates. Sometimes we had to travel a bit in more remote places, such as Kintyre peninsula, but it was never that far. We recouped the cost of installation easily within six months of having it fitted, lost no boot space as it was an underslung tank, and still off roadbed in the Jeep! Given how successful that was, we then decided to dual fuel our Jeep Wrangler. TJ 4.0. Different system this time, but basically worked the same. We still have this vehicle and still tow with it when required, it has specially reinforced plates protecting tanks, so we still off road in it, but not extreme black routes. Wouldn't hesitate to dual fuel again, huge savings.

Similar the above replies, personally no, but a friend tows all over Europe with his Toyota Landcruiser V8 and to the best of my knowledge has had no problems at all. Obviously due to the relatively small gas tank he needs to fill up more that's all.

I had a jeep grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 till 6months ago on lpg....no difference in power or mpg....pulled like a steam train, got rid as was getting old, bought a v6 diesel...even though it's a fantastic towcar should have gone for the v8 on lpg again.....miss that roar and grunt.
