Hi,

I have a Lunar Venus 380 van with a Winterhoff hitch.  I want to get a cheap hitch lock for insurance purposes (I also have a van alarm and a wheel clamp).  The Winterhoff ones new are £70 plus. I just want a cheap one - any ideas of a cheap one that fits the Winterhoff?  So much for hitch locks that say they are 'universal' !

    Hi Flutel,

I too have a Winterhoff and BPW chassis fitted to my caravan. When I first purchased it I had a similar decision to make.

There is quite a choice of hitch locks for caravans on the market.

Unfortunately, while many hitch locks are 'universal' they are often not suitable for caravans with stabilising hitches (BPW Winterhoff and AL-KO). This is usually because these kind of hitches have a separate lever/arm for the stabilising mechanism. Many 'universal' hitch locks are intended for caravans (generally older models) which do not have a stabiliser fitted.

The following options are all suitable for a BPW/ Winterhoff Hitch:

    - Full stop Saracen BPW from purpleline

-Milenco Heavy duty BPW hitch Lock

    -Robstop Winterhoff BPW hitch Lock

-Stronghold Sold secure BPW hitch Lock.

As you can see, generally a 'universal' Hitchlock may not be quite so universal.

I have personally used the Robstop for BPW for the last two years on my caravan and can highly recommend it. Pretty light weight/compact and 'Sold Secure' which may give you an insurance discount. I have seen this recently online for £60, well worth the money in my opinion. I hope this is of help.

We have a Winterhoff stabiliser and was given as part of the starter pack a generic hitch lock that locates and locks into the 2 holes on either side of the hitch with the handle locked down (small plastic tow ball used to lower the handle).

I will look at the make tomorrow as its now in the garage.

    Look on Ebay

Just checked and the one I have is the WS3000 Rob Stop Plus by Winterhoff. The price I paid was actually £128 !! Having said that I was very pleased how easy and neat it was to use. Could even use when hitched to car which I would do when parking up at motorway services.

it means.........how much is your caravan worth....(both to you and cost).........It would seem that you are prepared to cut costs and security and rely on your wheelclamp and alarm. The more good quality security that you use the more likely it is that thieves will move on to a less well protected vehicle. You also intimate that in the event of theft your insurers will pick up the bill! Why on earth would you fit a cheap universal item?

Maybe the OP could find a reasonably priced one to fit caravan in the club’s classified adverts.

Now let me see £100 + for a decent hitch lock or possibly lose tens of thousands pounds worth of caravan  , OK all / any caravan security is not 100% safe probably far from it .....................😱

Its a no brainer for me & I would imagine lots of other members ......you pays you're money & takes a chance or do you 😵
