tyre valves
has anyone had a problem with tyre valves splitting where it fits into the wheel rim I have had two split a couple of years ago causing the tyre to deflate and shred whilst towing damaging the wheel spat in the process ,I checked the other tyre and found that was also splitting ,so had to buy two new tyres all ok ,until yesterday I called to check the van and one tyre was flat ,another faullty valve assy taken both wheels to have new valves fitted .also same thing has happened on my 2012 mondeo .all tyre where supplied and fitted and balance by National Tyre Depot in Leeds over the last 2yrs tyre fitter do not know the reason for these failures ,does anyone know

It begs the question, where are Naional Tyres getting their valves from? Call in at another tyre fitters and ask if there are different qualities or grades of the valve rubber. Last time I had new tyres on my caravan I asked them to fit long valves, rather than the usual short valves. I did this to make checking the pressures easier. I am aware that plastic wheel trims can rub on the valves. If the splitting is at the base of the valves, is it possible that there is an issue with the holes in the wheels, wheel corrosion at the base of the stem, or the way they are fitted and stretched when pulling through the wheel? Personally I would go with the issue of rubber compound, there must be variance between manufacturers. I cannot give a definitive cause but only make suggestions.

As an afterthought, consider having the valves replaced at a different garage, new valves would be cheaper than a ruined tyre and careful examination of the wheel holes is needed. I was a vehicle examiner for serious / fatal road accidents. There must be a cause, the problem is finding it. My local fitter is next door to the MOT testing station who have many years of experience. If you have one of the split valves take it with you.

it is too late to take a valve for examination now but I am going to keep a close eye on the valves etc .the wheels are alloy so no wheel trims to worry about .I used a different tyre fitter for the new valves this time.had both long and short valves fitted and both size/type had split .it has been suggested that the valves should be lubricated before fitting so that they are not over stressed something I will have to ensure happens next time I have tyre/valves fitted ,although you would expect the fitters would know this ,

Caravan wheels and tyres are heavily loaded and should be considered to require parts to commercal vehicle standards as replacement. As such, ordinary car tyre valves would be unsuitable.

I'd never ever thought about it, but I very much doubt there's a difference. At what point do you fit a commercial tyre valve to a caravan? My caravan tyres are only inflated to 30-something psi cos there are 4 of them ....... do I still need a commercial tyre valve?

Standard tyre valves are rated up to 65psi.
I've had the same problem with tyre valves splitting after around three years on the caravan and the camper, replacements did the same so I have now fitted metal screw in valves.

This problem is more common than you think and as I suggested earlier the problem will be poor quality rubber and poor manufacture of the stems. In other words, inferior stems. Google and have a look at other forums. eg a posting from techno-fandom. org. This is supported by the fact that your stems were all fitted by the same supplier, who simply buy and fit the cheapest possible and let you deal with the consequences.

I have had similar. My last 'van was 4 years old, both valves perished, tyres OK. My current 'van has had valves replaced, fitter said all were perished, but 7 year old tyres are like new!
My car was 3 years old when I bought it from the S English coast. Tyres were very perished, and I had two flat tyres: perished valves!
For most cars it probably doesn't matter, as tyres/valves will be changed after 2-3 years. Caravan tyres are maybe more at risk.
