So you've arrived on site, you're all set up, the sun is shining and it's time to start thinking about your evening meal. Do you:

A. Set Up the BBQ

or

B. Go out for a meal?

We asked this on our Facebook page and it looks like BBQ is just winning. Let me know what you prefer and why and if you have any pictures too it would be great to see.

Yes, as BB says there is a third option here.

Although we have a gas point it must be years since we had a BBQ. We either use the gas hob/oven in the van or go out.

To answer the question though its a meal out on the first night.

Bung it in the microwave much quicker usually less clearing up so more time to enjoy relaxing, also less stink/smoke for neighbours to have to put up with by barbies wink

If the weather was beautiful we would take our meal out as a picnic. A few times when we've stayed at Troutbeck club site we've taken our salad and a dessert and a glass of wine for the passenger and have gone down to Ullswater at Glenridding. Here you can sit at a picnic table beside the lake - just perfect. When we had a stopover at the Malvern site we took our picnic up to Worcester Beacon. A short walk and views to die for. This year when we go to Troutbeck we're hoping top take our first evening picnic up to Walla crag.

Cook in the van first night unless we're within walking distance of a good pub....or even a visiting chippy.

Cook in the van make sure we have a homemade easy reheat meal prepared, often frozen in advance at home. Decent weather eat it it outside. We too have been known to take our van off site to dine but not generally on first night unless we have been before and know where to head off to.

BBQ as far as I can see involves using cooker as well. For 2 of us not worth the effort in the van or at home. Hate the smell of others BBQ and smoke is worse again at home or away.

Nice to have a meal out if within walking distance and delay our home cooked one.

With the time of arrival at Club sites being dictated by Club Rules it means lunchtime has already passed, and the evening meal is still some time away. So using division of labour, my girlfriend can produce a snack of some soup and sandwich/toast combination while I do the setting up of water systems. This also tests the electric (microwave and espresso machine) and gas (oven and grill) systems function correctly.

I cannot recall the last time there was a long enough period of hot dry weather to even consider getting the barbecue out (that's "Caravanning in Britain" for you!) but it is still carried in case of gas equipment failure on an non-electric pitch.

Hi Rowena, well what a mix of answers! My first thing would be to have a drink while I think about it but for us, and the family,it would probably be the BBQ.

In reality it is a multiple choice depending on the circumstances, time of year, weather etc BUT in the situation you describe its the BBQ with eating out not second but a shared favourite .

Why? well its a great way to socialise, means that my wife does get a bit more of a break and you are outside. We love our van but its a means to an end and that is to have a break and spend time outdoors and, fingers crossed, enjoy the weather.

Pics are last week on a D&C Rally at Newquay.

I don't do BBQ's, nothing against them other than the work involved, this set against sitting at a table and someone else cooking and serving its no contest.

So out for a meal whenever the opportunity after all its holiday time, and something very quick like salad or tins of something at other times.

What a great mix of answers and it's interesting to see what everyone does for that first meal on site. Love the picnic idea. TomSue, I would love to see a picture of your picnic on Walla Crag if you get the chance to take a photo.

A good idea also Bakers2 to prepare the meal before you leave home and then pop in the oven when you get there. Me and Mark often cook double anyway and freeze half at home for another meal another night.

We would get the BBQ out as we love a summer BBQ and being outdoors, plus Sam (my now 1 year old son) is very sociable and loves babbling to people walking by. The next day would be a walk in the morning, followed by a pub lunch and then maybe a bit of shopping in the local town in the afternoon. Bliss...smile

Like Dave, we don't do BBQs.

Being MH-ers, we would probably have stopped for our main meal earlier in the day at a place of interest en route to the site. We might have a sandwich in the evening.

There you are - another option.laughing

Since I prefer my main meal earlier in the day I probably get out the avocado and then have cheese and so on outside in the sun of course. Seldom eat out unless with other Solos!

We usually eat at the van, inside or outside. We will eat out occasionally if good pub nearby. Stopped carrying a BBQ a long time ago, too much work and weight.

We don't BBQ when away in the van, don't actually do it much at home either. We generally cook in the van with a meal out now and then, usually mid to late afternoon.

BBQ / griddle every time. As long it is not too cold I prefer to cook on it outside, although we usually eat inside. Although we do go out for meals occasionally, I much prefer to buy some decent ingredients and nice wine for a lot less than your average restaurant prices.

For instance a nice BBQ'd sea Bream with a Provençal Rose. PS there were some veg as well.😀

Why lump a heavy hunk of metal around (the BBQ) when you can eat out or cook in.

Once less thing to reduce your MPG, and have to clean afterwards.

!st night after travelling, supermarket bought microwaveable chilled meals with a bottle or 2 of Bud eaten inside or outside, dependent on weather.  Relaxing & much less washing up.
