hi can i ask do you have to use towing mirrors by law when pulling a caravan ???

For most tow cars and caravans yes.

It's the field of vision that is the legal requirement, not simply the using of extension mirrors. However, as Easy said, most outfits will need extension mirrors to achieve the legal requirement.

Why would you not want to use towing mirrors? I used to tow with a 4x4 and I can't imagine towing without mirrors.

The law requires you to be able to see down both sides of a trailer. In almost all circumstances if using a car to tow a caravan you will need extending mirrors. It is illegal to drive with them on when not towing though so do remember to take them off again.

Even if your wide towing vehicle gives legal views down the sides/rear of your narrow caravan you can still expect to be pulled over by the law in order to check that you actually are legal.
It's much the same as some police stop motorcyclists wearing helmets but no other protective clothing, like the French police were dressed while they were with the T de France, rather resembling the American police on "Chips" the T.V. programme .

To Be Fair I understand what you mean, but one slip, on a day when you have 300 miles towing to cover, and out they'll come like biting midgies when you have short sleeves on

When did anybody see a motorway traffic car?I have just travelled 100 miles on M20,M26 and M25.I did not see a single traffic/police vehicle!A number of vehicles,mainly German brands,travelling at well over 100mph(estimated).I saw a white Volvo travelling in a smart motorway lane 1 with a red X over it,I saw an Audi driver holding his mobile telephone high in the air with the cover open,I saw continental HGV lorries travelling at 60 ish mph with less than a cars length between them,I saw vehicles travelling in lanes 2 and three when lane 1 was empty!!!! BUT I never saw a traffic car!!!Beleive me...if I set off with no towing mirrors....I would be pulled within 10 miles!!!

I was at a meeting at our police headquarters about ANPR cameras some weeks ago,and what i will divulge is that the instances that were noted by Dsweetman will not have gone un noticed,and a good chance that some of the drivers that were noted will be receiving an unwelcome letter or visit
