Unable to access the free wi-fi on Club sites
I have searched for this topic to no avail so hopefully I can get some answers here and feel that this area is probably the best place to post. Moderators please feel free to move if you think best.
I have recently visited two sites at Baltic Wharf & Tewkesbury that have good Wi-Fi. I wanted to post site reviews and decided I would use the free access to the Club's website to do so rather than using my data. However I could not get onto the free website from the Airangel log in screen. Each time I clicked on the button to the web site, which is how I used to do it before, I got a message something like unable to access the server due to security issues. I have done this successfully before but normally on a laptop although I have used both this iPhone and tablet previously too. This time both my iPhone and Android tablet could not get access.
Is there a problem or am I doing something wrong or has the free access now been removed. I could get there via my own data connection so the website was working.
Regards, Roy

I wonder if this is because the access screen has been changed to an https:// (rather than an http://). This change to https:// seems to be happening a lot recently. (I have had emails from my own domain provider suggesting that I should change to https:// to improve security.)
The PROBLEM is that if you type in the address of the service you require, and it is https://, then it will not allow you to connect. The solution is to type in ANY address that you KNOW is still simple http:// . This will then by default take you to the login page.
Same applies when trying to access BT-Wifi, and also recently to the campsite wifi in Spain

Have you tried clearing your browsing cache? (Delete history)
also, the 's' in https is, I believe, simply designating that the site has security protocols (e.g. Such as a bank website) so by definition a site with only a http website address does not have the same levels of security. None of that should affect access.
i have never experienced in difficulty in accessing the club wifi, except when the signal is just too weak due to distance from router/booster. As soon as I walked nearer, it was ok.
as has been said by others, could this be a setting on your tablet? Or as above, try clearing the cache.

We were at Ferry Meadows for 3 nights early last week. We couldn't get into the Club site either. We tried the tablet, laptop and phone (having been dragged into the 21st century by our nephew at Xmas!) but all of them said: caravanclub.co.uk has unexpectedly closed the connection.
Went to the office to ask if they knew of any issues, no, they didn't. Only advice was to ring Airangel (at Wharfedale last year when we had a problem, the warden immediately offered to ring, and did, to sort it out, but not at FM). So we rang Airangel, explained the situation, they said they would get back to us. Next day they did, they hadn't solved the problem, but as we were there for another day, they gave us free 24 hour internet access. They did mention that there were others at FM with the same problem.
After that we stayed at a CS, and after that at White House Beach for 2 nights. Had the same problem, but didn't bother ringing again. At Norfolk Broads it was working perfectly all the time. We assumed the problem, whatever it was, had been solved.

Had the same problem at Ashridge Farm this week using an Android tablet. The link from the home log in page that says you can access the CAMC web site without registering for Wi-Fi didn't work for 2 nights. 3rd night I got access, eventually, via Google. 4th night I couldn't get access via Google, but, after many attempts I eventually got access but it worked as it does on my mobile, ie, had do do that ridiculous left scrolling. Gave up, just too much hard work.
Sometimes the CAMC website home page came up but there was no menu to take you elswhere, just a dead end.
Had similar problems at Abbey Wood last year.
The wife paid for 2x 24hr Wi-Fi periods using a Windows 7 net book and had no problems with internet access. We didn't try to access the CAMC website but would have expected it to work. The only problem she had was trying to log off. The log off page was reluctant to come up and several attempts had to be made.0 -
We got back yesterday from 5 nights at Stamford site and had no problems accessing the WiFi at any time. Ironically it was the best connection we've ever had, and it's only a "bronze" site. I have an iPad and always access the login screen via settings and selecting the Caravan Club WiFi (that's still its title). The only time I couldn't get on at all was the very first time, several years ago. You have to set your device to enable cookies otherwise it won't work and, for some reason, I couldn't log in even though I had enabled cookies. Eventually I managed it, but can't remember how.

Same problem at Rowntree Park 2 weeks ago. Could access the pay Wifi although very slow as usual but could not access free CAMC site on any of our devices all week. Reported to warden and put on review of site. I suppose it would be a problem if you wanted to pay for WiFi for first time or renew access.

We had the same problem at Chatsworth two weeks ago. I subscribe £25 for a years access and no problems with this whatsoever. However, if I am just going on CT I usually don't bother logging on and only use the free access. It just kept coming up with unable to access server. This was on an iPad. I have never had a problem previously and we have been using the wifi for several years.
Personally though I don't have a problem with it. If folk are taking up the bandwidth, which is often limited on a lot of sites, they should be paying for it.

As to it being something to do with security issues. I don't think this is the case. Since downloading some of the latest iOS updates the software now warns you clearly that a network is not secure. However, it does not prevent you connecting to it. Supermarket wifi for instance, now always comes up as insecure. I just don't use it for anything sensitive.

Thanks for all your replies. It seems to be a problem for many. I cannot quite understand the point of paying to access the Clubs web site to leave a review when it has a free connection to the Club web site only & it is too expensive to pay airangel when we only spend about 3/4 weeks a year on Club sites compared to 17 weeks + on others, mainly abroad. In the U.K. I would just use my data which I pay for & get connected all the time. Regards Roy

My only 'complaint' is that I activated several 'Three' data cards before going to Spain .... and then found vastly superior wifi available at all campsites .... either free or for very low cost.
A 3GB card has already expired (with negligible use) ... and a 12GB will also expire soon.
Lesson learned!

Hi everyone, I am so sorry you have been experiencing issues with this. The IT team have investigated and this has now been resolved so you should all be able to access the Club website for free when on site. Thanks for letting us know about this and please get in touch if you experience any further problems in the future.

Didn't have any problems at any of the sites we visited in January,
Bury, Chester Fairoaks, Bristol Wharf, Ferry Meadows and Middlesbroug.
Can't remember but I don't think I logged onto the AirAngel site when accessing the Free wifi for the Clubsite. I seem to think it came up automatically when I moved from site to site as I clicked on the CC logo.

It seems like there had been a problem, according to Rowena's post, and it's now fixed. Regards, Roy

Kjell, the reason was that I could not get a definite answer as to whether you could activate abroad - even from '3' themselves. This was also allied to the (supposed) widely discussed issue that you could only use a particular SIM for a maximum of 1 month (calender or 30 days??) in a 'feel-at-home' country.
You apparently been able to successfully activate a new SIM abroad. .....out of interest, which countries?
'3's policies and implementation seem to be obscure and variable. Maybe they vary according to which network you connect to abroad/what device you have/what tariff you are on ..............who knows!.
All our phone and data SIMs remained active for over 3 months in Spain. We even had a dual-SIM smartphone and had both a phone and a data SIM installed, and both worked according to what we were using the phone for. As soon as we got back to UK, the data SIM stopped working and we got a message from '3' saying phone set-up incorrect!!
I use a dongle with an Alfa R36 router. This works well in UK, but seemed very slow on the few occasions I tried it in Spain.....it seemed to be reverting to GPRS. The data connection on the smartphone in contrast was excellent speed 3G in the same locations, but of course would not allow tethering (as '3' clearly state).
