Hi looking at potentially getting a Ford S-Max to tow our Elddis about 1350kg MIRO, does anyone tow with the S-Max and can you give any feedback not only on the S-Max but any of the cars listed below that we have also looked at and have test driven.  Such a huge decision I want to make sure we get it right and would value your opinions - tested and looked at:

Nissan X Trail (like and good CC discount but not 2.0 ltr available to purchase at the mo)

Ford Edge (loved it but not sure I can part with that amount of cash for a Ford)

Santa Fe (liked but do we need such a big car for the rest of the year when towing)

Kia Sorento - currently have a 53 plate but getting a little old (glad Hubby can't trade me in for getting old), shocking service at Kia in Wolverton and brought out some expensive sheds - so knocked that one on the head!

BMW X3 - vomit box didn't even get out the car park before starting to feel sick

Passat Alltrack - Seems overpriced

I have towed a 1550kg Stirling Quartz with a 163ps Powershift S Max for 3 years ( and previously a Swift Challenger @ 1600kgs with a manual S Max). Both of these cars towed faultlessly and had enough power to manage the caravans.

You shouldn't have any problems with the Eldiss.

Both cars were also extremely reliable.

Had the old 140 Zetec Smax for nearly 10 years and towed like a dream.  Was that pleased with the car that I ought the new model Smax 150 PS last October and whilst not done any long distances yet it seems every bit as good towing MTPLM 1500KG

Agree with all positive comments after using a diesel 163 Powershift towing 1500 MTPLM all over Europe including steepest hills for 5 years.

Also there is loads of space (possibly more than some 4 x 4?) and with 3 full size seats in second row plus two occasional in 3rd row (or massive boot) making it a very versatile vehicle. with commanding driving position.

No service issues other than 3 yearly gearbox oil change at £200 - but transmission is a gem IMHO so worth it.

Tried the 140 but felt slow as we had 120 C-Max previously. 163 has more than enough power for us.

Fits in our garage and takes roof racks for bikes which we put up using caravan step.

Galaxy or similar would have even more space and flexibility without going 4 x 4  although you can get 4WD on some Ford models?
