Swift and Alde Fluid

Beware- Alde fluid. Took our 12 month old Elegance 530 in for service yesterday and the Alde fluid had turned yellow as it had bacteria in the fluid. The system was full when we received it and has never been touched by me as we have never had the levels drop.

Dealer spoke with Swift who said that as it was a consumable it had nothing to do with them, even though they fill the system prior to delivery. However Alde were more helpful in that although they insisted it was a consumable item, did give guidance on how the system should be flushed and did acknowledge it had happened. Still not sure what would happen if we had to claim for a new boiler but the dealer has kept all correspondence; still had to pay for the flush and refill though which was very annoying.

Dealer spoke with others, and it appears that this is not unique, and it may be a case that Swift diluted the Alde fluid with tap water as opposed to ionised water, hence the introduction of the bacteria. I would add that this is a possibility and not an accusation that Swift did, but how else could this have happened.

The warning here, is that I would suggest all those with Alde heaters keep a close eye on the fluid, and if it shows signs of going yellow or starting to smell of urine, then flush and change immediately.

Thew idea that it is a consumable is rubbish. If it was causing the problems suggested it was not fit for purpose and you are entitled to have it replaced. The contract is with the dealer though and I would demand replacement under the Consumer Protection A|ct. The dealer can then take it up with Swift and Alde but that is up to them.

It is a consumable - but not at 12 months. The dealer should have coughed up IMO

It seems a little bit odd that it happened at all. Surely the anitifeeze when it passes through the boiler must get hot enough to kill any bacteria? The towel rail, at the end of the system, gets so hot it is impossible to more than dab your finger on it.
