Hello, I am trying find specific guidance on Towing a VW Passat Estate 2.0 2015 based on the lowest BHP of 147.

Ideally, I would like a 4 x 4 ( Alltrack ) with a higher BHP but basing my search on the 2 wheel drive and 147 BHP

If you have results for both great,

My caravan is a Swift Challenger 540 2007

Mass in running order 1274

max TPLM  1480

I can't find the exact caravan using the clubs match calculator facility.

I am an experienced caravaner.

regards

Ray

You could google Practical Caravan tow car test VW Passat Est it may be in among the cars that have been tested. There's loads of results on there for all kinds of cars.

The Passat Estate in its various guises is a fine tow car - it has been tow car of the year either in it's class or overall on many occasions.

We tow with an Alltrack and can certainly recommend it, the 4 wheel drive and extra heft over the 2 wheel drive versions add that little extra. With a kerb weight of about 1,700kg it is a good match for our 1,450kg van.  We like the economy >50mpg solo which is good for a 4x4, the space as the boot is huge and way bigger than most mid sized 4x4s and the 4 wheel drive bececause we mainly stay on CLs which can get a bit slippy if wet.

Hi Birdberry, is your VAN 1450 kg MIRO OR MTPLM ?

What is your MPG towing ?

I assume you are looking at the current B8 Passat range? We tow with a B7 previous generation 2014 model year Alltrack with 177bhp engine with DSG getting mid 20's towing and low 40's solo. That is real world brim to brim mpg...... The CC matching service is rubbish, try Towcar and the current Alltrack has been subject of a number of magazine road tests of late. It is good functional car bought with the head, tows our Sprite Quattro EW perfectly ok, however it is a bit numb to drive so if you enjoy good driving dynamics I would look elsewhere, I wish I had......

1,450kg is MTPLM and we do keep the van below that, so fully loaded we would be bang on the recommended 85% - we carry most of heavy stuff like awning etc in the car, no problem because the boot is massive. At this weight I think the car is a good match for the van and very stable which I think is helped by the long wheelbase.

Other good points about the car, it has a good 90kg towbar load and it also has a full size spare wheel, this being something I would not tow without.

Last year we towed 2,169 miles  - worst mpg was 26.6, best 31.8, average 28.7 all towing miles also had bikes on roof rack.  Yes I do keep a record !

Solo I average about 50 mpg but do no town driving and generally only use the car for longish journeys, I also don't drive like a teenager !

B8 Alltrack manual here. Great drive and a great towcar. I have the factory fitted towbar which is a dream.

Why do people keep a record of fuel used? Your tow car will do what it does, you can't influence it that much. I think a spreadsheet of my towcar's mpg & actual £s used would be too depressing.

useful for budgeting, useful for spotting problems, useful for helpfully anserwing peoples genuine queries and because I like to and don't find it remotely depressing and don't care what you think either.

Thank you very much, I also do not load my van up with awning etc. However, the boot will be reserved for two large GSds .

I used to have a 2006 Passat estate 147bhp if this is of any help , my van has MTPLM of 1470 . Had to bring revs up to pull away at lights and junctions etc. but once it got rolling was fine , competent tower . Problem was with it being FWD front end lifted when van attached so wet grass , light mud FORGET IT .It was useless !!!! mpg solo at 50mph onboard computer went up to 65mpg+ using cruise control , towing averaged out at 35-38 mpg. Lovely comfortable car but beware automatic handbrake !!!!! mine went twice costing me over £1000

Thank you for all the comments. I bought a VW Passatt Alltrack 177 BHP 4 motion 2013. The B7s are heavier than the B8s.

I get the towbar fitted today.  All seems good solo and not expecting issues towing with it.

+1. Presumably it is DSG? I have had mine identical model almost a year and 20k miles on top of the 45k miles it had on purchase. Towing a dealer special based Quattro EW with MTPLM of 1609kg it is ok, 24-26mpg towing and 40-42 solo. Drive to Austria last summer with the van and romped up the hills. Disappointed with solo economy albeit I think the tyres on mine do not help, they are non OE Barnum and Jinyu neither of which are low rolling resistance. I always use premium fuel such as VPower or Ultimate which after about 3 tankfuls noticeably improved smoothness and pulling. The DSG is great and a big improvement on the early DSG. Haven't had the emissions software fix yet, still unsure given the widely reported problems. A good if not exciting car. Watch out for thieves targeting the sat nav.......
