If you are an owner of the above spec vehicle and tow a caravan around the 1500kg range could you please post your thoughts, especially with the low profile tyres and lower ride height? Have no doubt about the engines ability to tow as it produces 204bhp. I am planning on fitting a Westfalia detachable towbar.

I was just about to order the above car when I noticed that the V5 doc had no unbraked or braked towing weights, very strange. So for now I have backed off from the deal until I can get some clarification from the dealer and MB.

Does the Vin plate show a GVW and GTW if so then your towing weight should be the difference between the 2 . If there is no GTW shown then the car is not tested for towing purposes and it would be illegal to do so IMHO.

    Thanks pagan8c

From memory the vin plate on the door pillar of drivers door had a  plate with the GTW of 4845kg or similar above the front and rear axle weight limits which I can't recall.

The owners manual indicated a max braked towing weight of 1900kg, but it was not model specific unlike my current Mercedes manual.

I think what is concerning me is the Sport spec 18" wheels and skinny tires for towing. I have driven the car and it is a superb car to drive solo, its a feel for its towing ability I am after. My current Mercedes is an E220 cdi saloon and it tows well, its the huge boot and self-leveling rear suspension that draws me to the estate.

It is reassuring that you own and tow with the AMG line version of the E220 Estate. I assume that model would have similar sports suspension and wheel set up as the 250 cdi Sport?

Did you go for the factory fit tow bar or after market? I am a bit concerned about if a cut-out in the rear spoiler is required. I will be checking with Westfalia Bristol before going ahead.

I really like the factory fit bars .Like you I have 1 on my Volvo which has an electric release and the 13 pin plug is icorporated in the bar so I don't have to fiddle underneath the bumper. It is also rated to 110 kgs so plenty of strength. I am sure the Merc 1 is similar and well worth a bit extra to pay since it is fitted as per the manufacturers rules and is covered by the warranty so there is no problem if something goes wrong.

You can get the factory fit retractable fitted at a MB workshop, but from reading the forums it is very expensive at £1250 plus fitting. Ouch!! The Westfalia comes in at £550.00 for the detachable with 13 pin electrics.

Anyway having got all the answers I needed from MB technical services and Westfalia I'm on my way to purchase the E250 sport estate this morning.

I'm looking forward to the extra space, better towing capacity and that 7 speed auto.

Deleted User User I would like to get your feedback on what tyre pressures you use on your AMG Line. The plate on the fuel flap indicates 33psi front 35psi rear for normal use. With the front staying at 33psi and the rear 45psi for fully loaded ie five adults and luggage.

For a while I followed the fuel flap info with my E220 saloon until I knocked out a set of Goodyear pro-efficiency grip tyres on the rear in 8000 miles. On the next set I worked on 39psi and that gave a good towing experiance and a good rear tyre wear pattern. This meant maintaining the correct tyre pressure when towing and touring with the car when away. Funny but I have never seen another caravan/ tow car combo adjust tyre pressures on a site.

The tyres fitted to the E250 CDI Sport Estate are as follows:

    245/40 R18 97Y XL front

    265/35 R18 97Y XL Rear

    Thanks Another David.

The towbar fitting is now booked for the 13th March and we are off to Beaconsfield touring park Shropshire that weekend. That will be our first tow. Exciting I think. By the way beaconsfield has a fab restaurant called "The Bothy" serving best Sunday lunch we have found. Can't wait.

we had one to tow our van - but the towbar height was too low and grounded the jockey wheel at any slight bump in the road / towed well enough , but sold it for a rav 4 , that did very well but now have a Mercedes ML 320 ....perfect !!!
