Towcar Insurance
Ford Mondeo 2015 Zetec Hatchback diesel 1997cc insurance renewal arrived today for £249.70 for year for two nominated drivers fully comp., and declared that vehicle is used to tow a caravan. I contacted them and asked for the premium to be looked at as no claims lodged for 6 years Also that I had been with them 17 years and happy with the service they offer. The premium was subsequently reduced to £226.60....I am covered for up to 16000 miles a year for that amount...I then asked the advisor what I would pay for a lesser mileage ..I informed him my annual mileage every year worked out at no more than 13000 miles so he checked and reduced my premium to £214.50 and this is the renew premium I accepted.... My point is, how many haggle with their insurer each year and were you aware that your policy may be based on you doing no more than 16000 miles when in fact you are doing much less and insurers are prepared to make premium reductions if you make them aware of the facts.

Just changed our insurer this week. Existing insurer loaded my premium because they hadn't recovered their outlay from a claim whereas I had recovered my excess. Basically they admitted that they hadn't actually asked for it! Even with a reduction in premium, reluctantly given, they were still £70 dearer. The new insurer didn't apply a mileage limit and I don't particularly want one just in case I decide at the last minute to take a Grand Tour.

Tried to haggle with Tesco this year after a few good years with them as increased premium by almost £100 - no change, so cancelled and changed surprisingly to my own bank Lloyds for less than last years! Result. Only problem now is that we bought a new car today, so have to go through it all again!

The basic problem with insurance is that many insurers are quoting unprofitably low figures to get business on the books and trying to recover this shortfall at renewal. It does mean that they are open to negotiation at renewal if they want to keep the business.
It is bad practice quoting low but it is a fact of life.
When taking quotes though beware that the cheapest quote may not be a bargain but one by a lesser company who if you have a claim will be far more difficult and could wipe out the saving you made on the premium. You can check the companies on http://www.ombudsman-complaints-data.org.uk/ What you are looking at is the number of complaints found in favour of the customer and the higher the figure the more dubious the insurer could be.

My insurer was Direct Line and I have found there service first class over the years. What I learned to watch for is, if you get a renewal in it will be for a sum higher than the renewal price you paid the previous year. So, if you get a reduction on renewal ,the next years renewal premium will revert back to the original price they asked for so don't think that just because you got a reduction before that they will carry on doing so the next year. You have to keep a record of what reduction you obtained before and use that as a tool for the next renewal. Your insurance expect you to haggle. Keep aware of any changes that may allow your insurer to agree to reduce your premium...Direct Line proved their worth to me six years ago.

However, my worst experience with an insurer was by far the largest company I was ever insured by - Aviva. Appalling service following a claim, I now avoid them like the plague.

I get new quotes every year on all insurances. In fact I get new quotes on everything, energy, internet, phone and breakdown and then haggle.
