Informative post , thank you.
Its the first positive post I've read of the 1.6 towing, sluggish on hills is what I've read previously.
Interesting that you say even in sport manual intervention is sometimes needed. It sound to me that the electronics isnt aware you are towing? or if it does the programming needs tweaking. I am assuming eco isnt selected? if it has is.
I've read of other cars GLC i believe, with the 9 speed box when sport is selected the box never goes higher than 7th. Which sounds sensible to me.
Is the CRV the same?
The CRV would tow like a train with a 2.2 L fitted say a Mazda engine with 420nm on tap.

We had the 2.2 towing a Bailey Pegasus Rimini (2013) and had no issues. We now have the 1.6 and have had it for just over a year and there is no discernible difference at present. to be fair tow mainly in the south and predominately motorways until nearer to the sites, hubby reckons its better, i think its about the same. I mainly do the motorways and he does the wiggly bits! we were also very sceptical, but so far so good, we to usually just under 60, but it will pull past anything in its path with no greater effort than the last one. i preferred the other car, but purely because it "felt" heavier and more truck like, but that's just personal preference. its on a three year deal thingy, so I wont be able to feed back on longer term issues it may have. I cant give you details on revs and torque etc, but as a lady tower 'Ive found no change, hope this helps PS this is an automatic, Chris uses the "manual" bit up steep gradients, this is rare, mainly towing back onto the storage site so its not a good test of sluggishness as its going from a standstill into a yard.

I assume the electronics are aware of the heavier load, but seem to be heavily biased towards economy, so it always selects the highest gear possible. This means that when cruising it will move up and down gears as gradient etc changes. It will quickly change up, but is reluctant to change down, leading to a drop in speed which then needs to be regained. And before the change, the engine is labouring to my mind.
In S mode it will stay in one gear all the time (usually doing around 2000rpm), on reasonably level motorways, and even on some hills.
I would think the gearbox is geared to general use - I suppose they might do some tinkering for towing but as we are a small part of the market that is probably unlikely.
