Average speed
Hi
Just wondering what peoples average speed when towing in the UK is .

Best average when towing was 49, almost entirely M/Way. Generally long distance towing is around 35-40 although last summer a town down from Anglesey to Pembrokeshire averaged about 22. Unless the route is predominately M/Way, a reasonable expectation, I would suggest is about 25-30.

When possible I tow at about 57 - 58mph. On journeys of over 100 miles, which will almost certainly have some dual carriageways / motorways, I have found, over several years, that the average speed always comes out at about 44mph. Consequently I always use this figure when planning journey times.
When we are in France and using the autoroutes the figure usually jumps up but only by about 2 mph as traffic is usually significantly lighter and journeys on the autoroute longer.
This question reminds me of when at work. I had an argument with a colleague about average speeds. He was complaining about the time it took our reps to get from one call to another. Although, in my opinion, he tended to drive like a maniac at times I challenged him to actually do a check on his own driving speeds. The mph over a one month period doing nearly 3,000 miles came out at 33 !. He never mentioned the subject again.

In 2016 from the trip computer on a 2286` trip to Italy 95% towing door to door we averaged 35MPH over mixed roads. Our other trip in France over 1691` we averaged 36MPH. You`ve really got to go some to exceed 40MPH door to door anywhere.

It's really a difficult one to be specific about. To go from home to Cornwall, for example, within 1 mile from home I'm on dual carriageway and then motorway and it's like that for much of the journey of 300 miles. This usually enables me to get to and pretty well maintain my optimum cruising speed of about 57mph so "I'm not going some" and never exceed 60mph. At that speed an average of 44mph is usually easily obtained.
If I go across to Norfolk then the roads are far more mixed and only a relatively small proportion is on dual carriageways and almost no motorway. Consequently getting to my magic 57mph cruising speed is less possible .

Our 'theory' is that we will start at 0800 and finish at 1800 and will take two 30 minute breaks and 60 minutes for lunch. We would expect to do a maximum of 400 miles in the 10 hours of driving.
The reality is that this has been done just once with a journey across Spain. Most trips we aim at around 300 miles, mainly on European trips, but the average of 40MPH is what we plan around.
I did once use my car info on a trip from Alderstead to Baltic Wharf, from the time of starting the car, and it was mid 20s!
