Don't know if the free travel extends to heritage railways, but if it does there is Haycraft and Lower Wensleydale. Main line there is Abbey Wood in London. Depending on what you mean by very close, as I would included 20 to 30 mins walk (or shorter bus ride) in that, there is also Baltic Wharf and Berwick Seaveiw.

Thirsk Race Course site is about a mile from the station. Trains go to York or Newcastle and further. The club sites directory tells you it's half a mile but the straight 7 furlongs runs parallel to the road and it's further than that. We've walked it in the past to catch the train to York.

Very close? Try Crossways in Dorset. Incleboro in Norfolk. Also Moreton in Marsh or Warwick about 20 mins walk. Totnes, Steamer Quay a similar walk.
Heritage railways as mentioned, try Minehead about 20 mins walk. Hillhead you'd need to take the short bus journey or car down into Kingswear.

If you look at my website and my list of UK sites you will see a small green motorhome symbol against some of the reports. This indicates that the sites are either near/in towns and villages or have access to public transport. It won't be trains in all cases but it might give you a few ideas. See here

Crossways, Dorset is right next to the station - out the side gate and about 50ms. to the right. One way to Dorchester, Weymouth, the other Wareham, Poole, Bournemouth. One word of warning, the sites at the far end from the entrance are right next to the railway line!

The CL at the Pridewater Marina in New Mills Derbyshire has access to buses and trains, very close by. Excellent full facility CL alongside the canal.

Arrivakids, I have spent last two years commuting up and down to meet my OH by train. We have found some lovely sites not far from East coast main line, and the Newcastle-Carlisle link gets you along Hadrians Wall territory, so some great places and lovely countryside. If you do some pre planning, you can get some very cheap train tickets as well. For example, I have done Doncaster- Berwick for £8.00, Doncaster-Edinburgh-North Berwick (for Yellowcraig) for £18.00, Doncaster-Newcastle-Hexham for around £11.00. Not sure what links are like on West Coast, but no doubt quite good.

Most heritage railways charge for dogs, main line is usually free, but best to check if there are carrying/transporting restrictions. If small, you should be ok.

If Arrivakid will say where she wants to go to on the train I will do my best to suggest a suitable station.
