Fruit and veg shortage
With the supermarkets rationing some fruit and veg ,I have a couple of spare lettuces I will swop for a parsnip and a swede

With the Brexit lead in time, growers and manufacturers have an excellent opportunity to grow what we import. If the global warming scenario is right we should be able to grow most exotic stuff here in the UK and rely less on imports. When was the last time you saw a UK grown tomato in a supermarket even in the height of summer.

Several empty baskets with apologetic notices on the fruit and vegetable aisles in our local Tesco yesterday.

UK tomatoes, grown in lots of places, in the height of the summer especially, look out for UK growers on the label or box. We grow our own and winter greens etc Still eating local potatoes, they've lasted through the winter £5 a sack.
Fresh veg, uk grown greens and root veg all year round.
I think the only greens I buy from Europe would be broccoli and I can switch to another uk grown green easily, as long as we don't have weather problems too.
ps why is broccoli a word I can never get right!!

I invariably buy the frozen ones, there's no shortage of those. 2 big bags of mixed Veg in the freezer

Wouldn't mind so much, but exactly how many people each spinach
? We can grow lettuces in the winter over here, and we have the most temperate climate in the world, never too cold and never too hot. We can grow most veg over here, but we were stopped farming by the EU, hence Maggie Thatcher fighting for us to get a "rebate". There's land a plenty for growing in this country, but that would probably depend on where the Councils are going to grow the extra houses that's needed0 -

This is a 'non-story'.
It was on Jeremy Vine today and it was quite embarrassing.
First he interviewed a fruit & veg wholesaler, who said that there wasn't any shortage.
Then he interviewed a fruit &veg shop owner, who said that there wasn't any shortage.
He had a 'roving reporter' reporting from a supermarket......who said that the supermarket was piled high with every sort of veg.
It seems that some of the supermarkets are not prepared to pay a temporarily higher price (due to bad weather in a few parts of Europe) and therefore some are temporarily short on stock of a limited few veg types.
Nothing to see here folks......move along.......

There's always a shortage of Sprouts in our house.
The last time they were brought into the house (in error) I used them in catapults to fire at the Squirrels to keep them away from the bird food. The cheeky blighters threw them back.

The reason that the supermarkets are rationing certain vegetables is because many commercial companies ( Resturants and Corner shops to name but two) instead of going through their wholesaler were buying in bulk from the Supermarkets and then selling the stuff on.
Supermarkets have put a stop to this by rationing, which favours their own customers. And quite right too.

Does anyone remember the shortages of basic food stuff, eg, sugar, coffee, etc, back in the 70s? People were only allowed a 2lb bag of sugar, and you had to be a regular at that particular supermarket, no shopping around to get more; also the prices went up, but funnily enough, when the "shortages" were over, the prices never came down. Personally, even though I was only a teenager back then and I helped my dad with the shopping each week, I knew then it was just a scam. Seems to me its making a come back again
