i have just replaced my old Smax with the new updated 2016 Smax. My old one was a delight of a tow car and my Existing outfit has a MTPLM of 1500KG which was a synch to tow as the Smax carried so much weight.  We are now looking to replace it with the Cartagena TA which we are limited to as it is the only one with a fixed double bed of 4ft 8 inches wide as well as some other features, but also which has a MTPLM of 1717KG and the car has a mass in service of 1725KG. I know this is a nearly a 100% match but wondered if anyone could share any experiences of towing the Cartagena or similar.  In reality, due to the huge boot capacity of the SMax I always carry the heavy stuff in the boot, especially the awning and other weighty stuff so in reality with 2 adults and 2 kids of adult size, plus luggage the car weighs several hundred kilos more than 1725kg  when towing.

What are real world experiences of towing with such a match, and in particular am I likely to struggle with noseweight as I understand the Smax limit is 90 KG.  Thoughts would be much appreciated as the wife wants to have a look at some over new year !

Cheers.

Sorry .... no idea about your car, but I wouldn't worry about your 'limited' nose weight. My towcar has a 2200kg kerbweight, has a max towing weight if 2100kg but has a noseweight of just 85kgs. I've never had a problem. wink

You might find the link below helpful which provides information on tow car to caravan matching. I did check the CC's matching site compared to Tow Sure. The latter gave a much higher weight for the tow car as it includes an allowance for driver and fuel. You can also additional weight to both car and caravan allowances. For example the awning you mentioned. The CC site appears to deal with the factory weight of the car which does not even include weighty items such as the tow bar.

Sorry I don't know how to make the link but you can copy and paste.

Is the new S-max the 4x4 version??? (nice motor)

If not, I`d be concerned about front wheel drive only grippage with that kind of weight.

No not the 4 wheel drive.  Sorted it now thx ....ordered a swift 580 which is single axle...got the same layout as the double axle but only 40cm shorter so seemed a no brainer
