I am considering buying a new towcar, the latest shape Tiguan 150 SE. The brochure quotes a kerb weight range 1641 - 1881 kg. Not very helpful as I would like 1700Kg minimum.

Does anyone own the latest Tiguan as a towcar? Have you possibly weighed the car on a weigh bridge?

Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Also considering a Tucson, Kuga 180, and Mazda CX5

Have you tried going to a dealer and asking or looking on the VW website?!

Flatcoat - Dealer only refers you to brochure, which shows the weight range I quoted. V5 on the SE I test drove quotes 1641Kg (bottom of range quoted in brochure), even though it is not the lowest spec vehicle.

Only one in range given an actual weight, is the top spec 240PS SEL/R Line auto at 1795Kg, which is a bit bizzare, given the range they quote is 1641 - 1881Kg

I too am considering a new tow car and I am finding the process a minefield of conflicting information.  Kerb weight is supposed to include the weight of a driver.  Many drivers weigh more than double my weight when I am wearing plenty of clothes.  Car dealers look mystified when I ask them about kerb weights.  Is it not time that we start using a different parameter to assess suitability of a tow vehicle?

If the MTPLM is 1453 I am not sure what the problem is? Even the lightest weight quoted would give under 90% towing weight ratio. Unless you are intending buying a new caravan? Personally I would be politely but firmly telling the dealer if they cannot supply the information , your business will be taken elsewhere to another brand.

1641kg is not really a problem with my current caravan which is 4 yrs old, but as I'm changing car, I would prefer to gain a bit of 'kerbweight headroom' to give me more choice of caravan at the next change.

As Qashqia66 says, dealers are generally clueless, so going elsewhere isn't likely to help.

All those cars i would also consider.

My CX-5 is the heaviest in the range at 1703kg.175ps  AWD auto.

What i would say is go for a auto with AWD with a trim near the top of the range to get a heavier car.

Or a Discovery Sport from 1785 kg (4WD).

Vulcan, if it would go down my drive, I'd have one as I can get up to 20% discount through being in British Steel Pension Scheme. I know its daft, but I like to garage my car.

I'm in the BS pension scheme myself, but havent heard anything about 20% off.

Although i find that annoying i'm the same as you the DS is so wide its unreal, my garage is a double but two doors at 2.1M wide.

Its a nice heated garage that also gives me an insurance discount for using it.

Best thing to do is pop into the dealer and look at a handbook.  The varied weight is to account for possible specification/options differences usually.

VAG Handbooks are normally a good source of correct information indeed ours matches the Mass in Service Weight.

Although the car itself actually weighs more than both.
