Who can carry out gas safety checks?
Hi
I have recently purchased a Mazda Bongo campervan and would like to get the gas cooker and pipework checked for safety. I have contacted Gas Safe and they said someone with the LPG - Caravan - LAV qualification could help. However, I have contacted a number of these companies but they say they dont offer this service.
Does anyone know of someone in the kent area that may be able to do this?
Also, do they need to be Gas Safe registered? There are a number of motorhome companies I have seen which say they do tests but are not Gas Safe registered. That sounds a bit dodgy to me!

Just Google 'habitation check kent' and you'll get several....
https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=habitation+check+kent
This is the first one of half a dozen covering Kent and is shown as 'Gas ACOPS Certificated' although that is no assurance of their practical competence as it merely means they follow H&S recommendations. They are mobile so will come to you.

If John's Cross Motorhomes at Robertsbridge isn't too far, go there. I've always had excellent service from them.

Thanks. I did see those on google but not really sure I trust ACOPS or whatever has replaced it. With gas I would not usually trust anything other than Gas Safe registered engineer. None of the kent ones I saw from google were gas safe 😞. Am I being over cautious?
Is the robertsbridge one gas safe?

As far as I am aware, any competent person familiar with LPG can do the check on a touring cvan/MH. It is not necessary for cvan/MH technicians to be registered with Gas Safe.
Over cautious? Yes, I reckon so.

Just for information, to work on gas, a competent person is recognised by being registered on the gas safe register. To undertake work or checks on a LPG installation, they would have to hold current certifcation on the relevant module and registered.

I think you will find that touring caravans/motorhomes are not covered by the regs. That is why cvan servicing technicians are not normally registered with Gas Safe.

What JC says is correct in relation to buildings, residential caravans and the like but, unless regulations have changed in recent years, touring vans are not included.

I stand corrected, my post wasn't totally correct. Sorry if I mislead.
Touring caravans and motorhomes that are privately owned and used are not covered by the GSIUR.
Touring caravans and motorhomes that are hired out, are covered by the GSIUR

Thanks for acknowledging that, John.
We have addressed the OP's concerns in confirming caravan/MH technicians do not require Gas Safe registration for working on touring units.

Unless the regs have changed since the foregoing 7 year old discussion, any competent person can do the work. For example, a mobile technician, a caravan workshop/dealership, Bill next door, yourself…. The key is finding someone who knows what they’re doing.
