Cough cough cough
I wonder how many of you out there have suffered this awful bug that's going around - and if so what have you found helpful? I'm now into my 5th week. The one and only symptom seems to be constant coughing fits, with the frightening complication (in my case anyway) of not being able to breath in. I'm not asthmatic but this must be how it feels for you poor souls. Doc finally succumbed to prescribing antibiotics last week but to be honest it's not made that much difference. I've now passed it on to her-indoors and we're not speaking any more, not because we've fallen out, we just can't!

Bad stuff GE, I got it in November, it's had 3 more bites at me each one less in severity. I've not been to Docs, they can't help anyway-when it hits just rest, drink lots(not alcohol) although I'm a firm believer in Whisky & Honey purely for the throat obviously graze thru the day-not big meals. It lasted 3wks the 1st one, a few days the rest of the bouts. Good luck in your fight.

I visited the practice nurse this morning about the exact symptoms described by the OP. I was unable to talk without bursting into a bout of coughing.
My chest and throat were fine, No antibiotics needed. Was recommended an off the shelf cough remedy and plenty of hot drinks. Have just taken the first dose an hour ago. Will let you know if it improves the coughing.

Sitting here at the P.C. with my warm pullover and a
Christmas scarf wrapped round my throat.
Like many others I fell victim to the BUG before the
C/mas festivities and slowly, so very slowly, am recovering
Early on I was using Day Nurse / Night Nurse but while it
certainly calmed the coff allowing me to get a nights sleep
but it did not appear to have any other effect apart from
thinning out the wallet !
I ended up using Huskypups remedy, at least it was a
pleasant enough taste eventually !

I got it about 2 weeks before Christmas, and still have the cough. Yes, too much talking brings it on, it feels like something is stuck in the back of the throat.
OH got it Christmas Eve, but seems to have recovered slightly better than I have.
Hot drinks and sucking Lockets seems to help.

This what I always resort too, I can remember my grandfather mixing it for me when young. Not so good if you've got a very sore throat but very soothing for coughs and colds. This unpleasant virus did the rounds in our village last year, I felt as though I'd got asthma. This year we threw off something similar a lot faster. Keep warm and keep the fluid intake up, being out in the cold seems to make it worse. Hope you all feel better soon.

I'm always frightened when I get even a cold, as it may bring on a bad case of cough. I first got it when visiting Annecy about 10 years ago, and I ended up visiting the doctors in Calais. He prescribed antibiotics, an inhaler (as I couldn't breath when in the middle of coughing), cough medicine, suposotries (not sure how to spell it). It certainly worked. All doctors think to prescribe over here is paracetamols and nothing else. For me, if its so bad that you've had it weeks, and its still not working, then go back to your doctors and demand something really strong, at the end of the day, you shouldn't have to suffer, doctors are there to cure you.

I started with mine on the 30th November, starting with a cough, then an awful cold, and I coughed all the way through December and most of January. I have still got a 'morning cough'. It does clear during the day, and is nothing like a bad as it was, but it is still annoying and persistent. I found absolutely nothing made any difference at all - inhaling steam seemed to loosen things and stop the coughing temporarily but didn't clear it. Honey and lemon drinks helped too but nothing completely cleared it. I coughed so much that it hurt my ribs every time, and made my stomach ache.
I sympathise with anyone suffering at the moment and hope that it clears soon but I'm afraid I can't offer a remedy guaranteed to clear it.

My son is a pharmacist. He recommended a cough linctus with a codeine-type compound in it, usually called pholcodeine. This will not cure, as it seems to be viral in most cases, but codeine has the effect of suppressing the cough.
My local independent pharmacist produces his own recipe cough linctus. It's magic!
I had the virus before Christmas and we have had loads of children at school with it. A couple of kids have gone on to develop pneumonia and pleurisy. It's really nasty

Bring back Galloway's Cough Mixture. I seem to remember as a lad that it always sorted out coughs, colds, sneezes and diseases. Or so it seemed. It was always my parents first line of defence, followed by Honey and lemon mixture (as above) and if you were lucky a shot of sherry.

Nov 17th at a get together for a birthday , I started coughing I am still coughing mainly evenings and first thing in the morning now, but have been so run down with this dam bug it's terrible, I have been coughing so bad that I came out in bruising around my ribs I honestly thought I had cracked a couple, read all news reports not to go to the doctor ect and try chemist load of rubbish they are to,
so sat back and coughed ! coughed ! coughed ! My son and hubby have been fine strange I thought but they have had the flu jab I didn't,
finally gave in last week and went to doctors as hubby and others said my breathing was so bad and said I sounded like bag pipes ,
after examination she said my chest was clear after a couple of other test as she herself said I was breathing very heavy , blow in this blow in that she sent me away with an inhaler said I might be asthmatic but gave me nothing for cough
The puffer as we called it doesn't appear to be making any difference , read in news paper that 7 out of 10 who doctors tell they have asthma and give them inhalers haven't !!

thanks folks for all your advice and sympathy. Into week five now and actually beginning to feel human again. Sadly not the case for her-indoors who is still hacking like an old crow (no offense dear-heart). I seem to remember saying "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy" then I gave it to her!

Glad to know we are not alone. We are suffering identically with most of the posts on here. My daughter told my wife to add grated FRESH GINGER to the hot lemon/honey mix...all in a cup of hot water...let it stand for a couple minutes, strain off ginger bits.
It seems to relieve symptoms.
It is dragging on............................................

I started my cough mid-October, and it began to go at the beginning of last week. That's just over three months of this! It's been unbelievable. I've had two lots of antibiotics, Beconase spray to try and stop post-nasel drip, a chest x-ray and an ECG! It looks as if I'm virtually clear of it now - just the occasional tickle. I have never had a cough like this, and don't want it again, thank you very much. It's been a nightmare. Not been able to sleep at night - unable to lie down. I've almost had panic attacks because of the state of my chest and throat, to speak nothing of the chest pain because of coughing (and the codeine prescribed to stop the pain) and the tiredness and exhaustion. Please let me not have it again - EVER!!
