Hi My husband has MND and we have bought a small mobility scooter that fits on the bike rack of the motor caravan. However some sites have all gravel roads which don't work with small wheels. We want to go to the Lake District in March, has anyone any ideas of which sites might be good for us, or  do any sites anywhere have a larger mobility scooter that can be hired. Woodovis does, but that is the only one I have found..Thanks for any help to keep us touring.

I think you will find that any cc site will have a properly surfaced roads, but no cc sites will hire a mobility scooter,

the local tourist information or mobility company in the area you are travelling to may be able to assist

Sorry I can't help but I'd say good advice from JVB66.  I know some places such as RHS gardens and NT offer the hire of all terrain mobility scooters as does our city council.  I presume they are only for use by the hour or in a certain location.  The Red Cross are good for mobility aids but maybe this would be too great a purchase price and a big risk for hiring out, might be worth a chat.

I do hope you find some constructive assistance and it may well be worthwhile actually having a thread on here as I'm sure your husband isn't the only one who could use this sort of equipment.  I wish you both well in your quest and your travels.

A call to sites you fancy might help on establishing what the site is like for your small wheeled mobility scooter. I can think of sites that have tarmac roads but not necessarily hard surface to get to them, one assumes grass wouldn't be easy either?

Troutbeck Head in the lakes has good surfaced roads with good access to the two toilets block. Pitches are all stone gravel though.

If ever you go up to the Melrose site, it has good surfaced roads and an area for caravans and MH pitches that is all tarmac. Also all the village is right next to the site and I've seen many such scooters going up and down the main two streets

Try www.mobilityhire.com to see if they have anything suitable.

We did have a flyer from a Mobility event at Castle Donnington for a company in Skegness who could hire (with delivery and collection) scooters, I think that covered all UK. Unfortunately I threw the flyer away.

There are a few places in the Derbyshire Peak district that hire out scooters for a day for use on their trails.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Dave

Thank you for your reply, grass is ok when the ground is not too wet, but Tarmac is the best.

I have looked at the National trusts sites and they do have mobility scooters at some sites, so I will do some research.

Thank you so much, Melrose looks perfect, I will add that to the list for another time. I will look at Troutbeck Head as it might be a possibility.

Meathop fell is also a lovely site handy for southern lakes and M6, also has good onsite roads and good access to the disabled facilities.

In that case I would suggest Great Yarmouth - tarmac roads free draining pitches, but a good way from home for you. Out of the site and down to a paved walk all the way a mile or so to Great Yarmouth proper. Moreton in Marsh, Broadway, these offer town within walking distance.  Difficult to recall other sites,we also use non CC sites and they'd be OK too.

Great Yarmouth is a long way but Moreton in the Marsh and Broadway would be great for 2-3 day trip, thank you so much.

Did you get to the C&CC site in Keswick Husky? If so was that any good for mobility scooter users?

Both Keswick and Braithwaite Fold C&CC sites would be good for mobility scooters, both sites are near shops, parks and lakes with good pathways.

AS stated by husky, there is a list of sites that are moility scooter friendly, started by me and contributed to by many members.

Unfortunately this thread seems to have been lost in the change over, perhaps a Mod or Rochelle could find it ?

My copy was in my list of favourites on laptop, but they will not go to the thread when selected, another anomaly of the change over. I may have a written copy somewhere and if I can find it I will repost, give me a few days.

Husky's post contains  the majority of sites as I remember, there is a jumble towards the end but you can work it out easily enough.

Hope this helps you Bhatcher, I know the difficulties  as Mr's bt uses a mobility scooter.      Hope this helps, just ask away if you have a question.....cool

I have looked everywhere for this information, it would be great to reinstate the list, so we can make personal additions. We have also bought a Sterling Diamond mobility scooter, but I would have to tow this as it doesn't come apart, so we are trying to travel with the folding Mobie.

    Thank you

I would have thought Southport would be particularly useful to access town and pier etc

    Hi,

Just for you info.on the club website, you can view the access statement for each site which will give you all the details you require. Choose any site, go to site details and then scroll down until you see the download access statement. they are very detailed about the whole site and very useful for anyone with a disability. Hope this is of help

I thought about this, but we have quite a long overhang from the back wheels, and thought the weight 106 kilos might effect the handling of the van.

Thank you, I have booked both, and also one in Ullswater Waterfoot Park. I will report back after we have been to stay in March, in case it helps anyone else in the same position.

rather than checking through all the sites as you are, and then looking (perhaps) to hire a different scooter thats more suitable, would it be possble to investigate having the current one uprated with larger wheels, or even moving to a different make/model that would be suitable for those obstacles you are looking to get over?

ISTM that by making one change, it might be possble to avoid the many changes and difficulties you might encounter at the venues you wish to visit.

just looking at this from an outsiders view, but as one who has noticed the differing styles and capabilities of the different machines on the market.

    good look with your research...

Not the Lake District, but another good site with a mobility scooter would be Ferry Meadows. Site is level with good surfaces, and you have the adjacent country park as well. In Summer, the Nene Valley railway has a station close to the site, and you can get into Peterborough easily using this. There is a cycle way as well, but cannot remember if it would suit a ms all the way into Peterborough, seem to recall gates and some barriers to get through.
