This is a previous thread from 2 years ago, but there has been a resolution, of sorts; I could not find the original discussion trail.

Jeep had a problem with the towbars hitting the fuel tank of Cherokee vehicles creating the possibility of a fuel driven fire that has caused deaths in the USA.  They decided at the time to remove towbars where there was less than a 50 mm measured distance between the tow bracket and the fuel tank and replace the tow bar with a reinforcing bracket, neffectivelybrendering the Jeep impotent as a tow car.

Many unhappy Jeep owners; then it seemed in 2015 some owners had replacement towbars supplied and fitted by Jeep that resolved the safety issue; I had no such luck since my dealer had no knowledge of this fix, and gave up returning my calls.

The situation was compounded by uncertainty regarding the insurance companies, some who said keeping the original tow bar was Ok, while others said ignoring a Safety Recall was irresponsible behaviour and would invalidate your insurance.

Then there was a possibility that Jeep could not fit towbars because the Jeep had not passed or been submitted to a European Towbar test; Hells Bells!

Anyway, after 2 years I was told today that in 2015 Jeep did agree to supply and fit FOC a Jeep aaproved towbar, I believe detachable and thecdealer has ordered the same for me.

I spoke with Jeep Customer Services in Italy on  Freephone number 0800 3899119 and explained the situation; I had tp provide the VIN number of my car and they issued a Case Reference Number that I passed to the Jeep dealer who has arranged the parts and the installation.

My situation was apparently 'not normal' and they are going to fix ASAP; probably the fact that Jeep were surprised their dealer had been less than proactive in their Customer Service did not help, especially when I told the dealer this.

So, if you have the reinforcement bar, Jeep will provide the replacement towbar and fit it for free.

I will let you know when the work is completed, but I am hopeful.
