VW Emission software fix
I am have serious reservations in allowing the software change to improve emissions to be applied to my TDI DSG Tiguan, I have read so many bad reports of a serious flat spot at 1500/2000 rpm , which when towing is going to cause problems pulling from junctions etc
My question is, simple . Has anyone committed to having this “upgrade” carried out , and have there been any members having had this upgrade carried out on their VAG cars find performance compromised

There are lots of reports in various VW enthusiast forums of the software fix causing a big reduction in performance. The consensus being... don't do it if you can avoid it. The trouble is, cars under warranty that are being serviced in dealerships are having the fix forced upon them. Do a search in mytiguan.com, volkswagonforum.co.uk, volkszone.com etc and you will find lots of disgruntled owners

Ah, having just read the Honest John section I don't think I will bother with mine. I had been booked in last week however due to work I was unable to go, maybe had a lucky escape albeit few reports relate to Passats. I have printed off the HJ column and also asked for experience from Passat B7 users on the UKPassat forum before asking what my dealer has to say....

As requested, a reply from someone who has had his Tig 'fixed. I had my Tig 'fixed' in August then went on a 4000 mile caravan tour on the continent. There was no difference in performance either mpg or power nor any flatspots. I have to say that if I had not taken it to the dealers myself and waited I would not have know it had been done.

I had my 140PS 2.0tdi BMT Passat done about 6 months ago, just before a 3K round trip of France, plus numerous trips in the UK. Can't say that I have noticed any difference when towing or solo in either performance or economy.

There are pages and pages of reports , mostly negative , on “Honest John “ web site , mentioned this to the dealer , not surprising he denied all knowledge of any problems , I will be printing off a few pages to help his memory loss

Do not despair. The aftermarket tuning specialists will be on to this already and you will soon be able to have it "unfixed" at least, if not much improved over the original.

Funnily enough i had mine done and same engine as yours just before heading off to Italy with the van and no problems reported.

Presumably if you don't have the alteration then it will be picked up at the next MOT. My Passat goes in shortly but as the engine mapping has more flat spots than a 50p I can't see it making much difference.

Why would the MOT be a problem? This issue has no bearing on the MOT or vice versa, the MOT hasn't changed and presumably it passed last time? Amongst my colleagues with VW diesels the 2 who have had the 'fix' both have problems. I am looking in to the legal action being started in the UK to see if it will cover fixing the fix......

Just had mine done not towed yet but no noticeable change in the way it drives. Was informed that it may use more adblue but the next five refills will be carried out free of charge by any VW garage also given free service and goody box for any inconvenience.

I think the legal action in today's news is more akin to the US class action, which, may result in an option for VW to buy back vehicles or compensation paid out to recover any increased devaluation at resale. Either way, it's going to cost VW dear if the UK legal action is successful, not only financially but also further damage to their reputation.
VW have already removed sales of all diesel cars in the US, can't see that happening over here but, you never know.

As an aside on this topic, Vag are finding there are less owners in the US selling their cars back, a much bigger than expected majority are happy to keep their cars. In addition Ford and Mazda amongst others are introducing additional diesel models into that market so maybe it is not the death of diesel some are predicting.....

Just had my 2.0TDi Skoda 'fixed' this morning, had a chat with the service manager about some of the comments on forums. he told me, no problems reported back to him on cars that have had the fix with the dealership.
Away in the morning with the caravan for a few days will get it up to 60mph on the A1M (weather permitting) and make judgement then. He did say if any problems, then I have to contact him.
Got a nice goody bag for the inconvenience, Skoda umbrella, mug, pen and a shopping trolley token!! plus they give the car a wash and topped up the screen wash.

I've decided not to get the so called fix done, based on the premise that if it ain't broke ....... And also the bad experiences of many who have the same model as me and have noticed a drop in performance post fix. In the uk there is no legal requirement to have the fix done, unlike in the US where emissions standards are different. I have this confirmed in writing by vw, who advised me just to let my dealership know when I take it in for service. The stealers will be keen to do the job as they get paid by vw to do it, so I would take with a pinch of salt anything they tell you.
By the way, group action is now being started in the uk, as you probably know by now. I've decided to join this as I am still pretty peed off with vw for lying about my car's emissions. Id really rather kill as few people as possible, although I now know that driving a diesel is in itself not good news and will look to alternatives when I look for my next tug. Pair of horses maybe?

I don't think the emissions are altered in anyway, simply the misreporting of them as testing time.

After collecting the car (2.0TDi 140ps manual) I gave it run solo, did not notice any difference at all, acceleration was good in all gears, it just seemed the same. Hitched the caravan on the next morning and away to Clumber Park joined the A1M, accelerated up to 60mph, again no problems everything is just the same, no flat spots, smooth, same mpg on trip computer and at 60mph in 6th gear the rev needle sits between 1,500 and 2,000rpm as always.

It appears Another side effect of the software mod causes the EGR to run hotter putting more strain on the EGR coolant system leading to component failures. Doesn't show up for a while after the 'fix' but becoming increasingly common as time goes on.
