Local bolt hole?
What is the shortest distance you travel to a site if you want a quick getaway for some peace and tranquility?
A neighbor asked where we was heading "a CL in the Lincolnshire wolds 18 miles away " he looked very confused as he only likes to get tangoed on the costa del sol 
Would be great if every destination was a half hour drive away on this stunningly beautiful Island of ours.

Agree with JD above, it doesn't matter how far you go, if you find somewhere that suits your needs then great. I find that I don't need to travel hundreds of miles to enjoy being away in my van.

We have camped "local" several times. 4 , 5 and 7 miles away, but our record is in the same village less than 1 mile from where we live. In fact we have done the latter twice now, and on different sites.

When we were downsizing to a bungalow last October. , we spent a few nights in the van at Beecraigs Country Park Caravan site. It's where we often go to walk the dog. ( beautiful location ) It's only 15 minutes drive from home and meant that we could nip down to the house every day.

I'm impressed you have found sites in Essex. I assume CL's? I reckon our closest was 20 miles, collecting our motorhome on the way about halfway. We've done it twice and will be repeating.
Distance isn't everything, it's lovely to do a different type of exploring locally. This is a beautiful county, despite the negative press, set in a beautiful country.

When we were both working we would very often pop up to Cirencester or Longleat - both about 40 minutes away - for a weekend break. It really doesn't matter how far away or near to home you are, time away in the van is a perfect antidote to a stressful life!

Totally agree for me forty or fifty miles is great for a weekend and that gets me into the Peak district which is stunning.Im, not into driveing hundreds of miles anymore as i,ve done all that years ago.As you say this is a stunning country and i would,nt live anywhere else.

Our closest site is 40 miles away......any closer and I feel that we could just go there in the car (and even that distance is too small, but it's a town centre site where there are specific reasons for going).
Ordinarlily, I'd say a minimum of 100 to 150 miles is required in order to feel like we've gone away somewhere.

When we are heading south we often use our local private site for a night and it is just on a mile from home. Also used to take it there for the grand-daughters to have a few nights away (it was a different world for them) and they are about 2 miles away.

Me and Mrs WN have indeed done this (obviously our drive not yours)
. House was overloaded with guests so we decamped so to speak. However when they all departed we had an extra couple of nights because we were enjoying it!Usually though we will use Wirral CP, about 20 minutes drive away, but it could easily be at the other end of the country such is the benefit we get from it.

We must be the exception!
When working we never did weekends, just way too much hassle for such a short time away.
Now we are retired we can please ourselves, but would not go anywhere less than about 25 miles away.
Home is totally peacefull, nothing to escape from, really no need to ever go away if peace was all we sought

Some 30+ years ago when the children were young we would often go off for the weekend. Often I would travel home from work on a Friday hitch up and go. Probably 1.5 hours drive. We would stop the weekend and return on a Monday morning. Worked for us. In those days sites seemed more roomy and we were able to hitch the car and van about 8pm on the Sunday, empty waste and water ready for the off. Next morning we would be up early as usual, kids washed and dressed in the 'van. Bowl of cereals, wind rear steadies up and tow away quietly about 7am. I would often drop the family off and take the caravan into work to save time unhitching. I would be in work before 9am.
I worked all over Cheshire designing and supervising the construction of small road schemes (at that time up to £1 million). Sometimes I would hitch the caravan in a morning and take it to work with me and drop it off during my lunch break at a site. Leek or Buxton when working near Macclesfield for example. How time shave changed because even though I might book an hour for lunch I might well take the 'lunch' early and drop the van on a pitch around 10.30am. Would struggle now!
How close might we go? We had a couple of sites that we used that were around 15 miles. We nearly always booked 3 nights as on a nice day there was no way that I would have wished to leave just after lunch. We wanted two full days.
We now tour rather than a short break. Although a few years ago when my F-in-L was ill and we missed a holiday we did take a break at Anglesey about 55 miles away I guess.

We have two lovely 'bolt holes' close to us which we use regularly. One, a CL at Flamborough which is about half an hour away (towing) and the other is a CS just outside Malton - just over an hour away. As others have said, it doesn't matter how far from home you are - you could be anywhere and, being retired, they provide a break from the routine of being at home and the opportunity to meet other people. A big advantage is that, since you know where you're going, I'm not on edge about the route and the possibility of any nasty surprises around the corner!

We don't need to get away for peace and quiet, we are very lucky to have that at home, and if anything its the opposite in that we go away to have some 'company' or for a change which, as the saying goes, is as good as a rest.
We attend rallies in Cornwall, that can still be 70 miles, but last year attended a rally at Pentewan Beach from where, with binoculars, you can see our house!
Just booked it for this year as well and it will be full on with Grandchildren playing/swimming, Adults doing same with a bit of food and drink thrown in-not literally of course.
So, if it suits us and looks like we will enjoy it, the closeness is not an issue-Pentewan is 15.2 miles by the most direct route but this would involve the Bodinnick Ferry so its 22 miles.

No problem for us as the caravan always held clothes etc and was on the drive ready to go. All that was required was to change clothes, transfer milk, cheese veg box etc to caravan, hitch up and go. We would probably decide on a Wednesday or Thursday and phone the site

4 miles from us. When we are there it's as though we are a million miles away from home.

During our season in Cornwall, we like to get away to a cl half a mile away from site! Very tranquil and very secluded, could be anywhere, we enjoy being holidaymakers for our days off.
