Calor Lite
I am considering changing from the traditional red propane gas cylinders to Calor Lite (think thats what they are called), what happens regarding the deposit which I paid on the red cylinders, is Calor Lite easy to obtain and is it available in propane.

Yes it is easy to obtain, although there was a shortage of cylinders a few months ago due to a recall, and Yes it is available as propane.

Calorlite shouldnt be more expensive. I just got mine when i picked up my MH start October and the salesman questioned the parts store saying it charged to little and charged a normal bottle by mistake, but it was confirmed by the parts/aftersales dept. that costs were reduced by calor and are now the same as the original bottles.

Also have a look at Gaslight bottles -
readily available from Homebase.0 -
Calor 6Kg Lites now seem to have a recommended refill price of £23.75 although a quick Google shows prices down to £20 or so!
Thanks to Auchtavanner for the heads up.

I rang the C.C. and asked if most of their sites stocked Calor Lite, they in formed that gas refill bottles are managed by the site wardens individually and therefore could not comment as to how readily available they were, perhaps that explains the price difference - may be a little extra revenue for the wardens?

Last summer, I was paying exactley the same for Calor Lite as I would for the steel bottles. I did ask the shop owner if that was correct, he told me, he bases the price on what it costs him, and he has never seen any differential in the wholesale price.
On a sepeate trip, and different location, I was also told the same ballarny about the lite being withdrawn. They would be delighted to sell me a new steel bottle. Walked round the corner and had a wee chat with the prop. of a Garden center that sold flo gas. He was delighted to sell me propane without contract for the duration of my stay.
Haggle. ;-)

Whilst Safefill can be cheaper, how much cheaper so depends on how much gas you use and the access you have to discounted refilling facilities.
The nearest comparison to Calor’s “Lite” is the Safefill 7.5 kg bottle and I have done a price check of the exchanges needed to “break -even”.1) For a new-comer with no gas bottle they need to get through the equivalent of 7 Calor Lites.
2) For a camper already with a Calor-Lite this goes up to 9.5 refills.
This has to be achieved in 10 years as by then the Safefill will be out of its certification, but using the Calor you will not have that charge. So Safefill has some 10 yearly repeating charge not faced with Calor.
The basis I have taken are the current recommended selling rates and todays LPG pricing in the next village. Also I have not included the extra cost that post and packing if needed will penalise the Safefill by;
Calor -Lite refill charge = £23.25
Calor- Litre Licence Agreement = £39.99
Shells current local charge per litre of LPG = £0.629, which with a density of 1kg/ 1.96 litres, equates to £7.40 per 6 Kgs.
Safefill, 7.5 Kg bottle purchase charge = £150These figures indicate today there is a saving of £15.85 over each Calor-Lite refilling by using Safefill, that initially needs to be used to off-set the difference in up front costs.
This is not an argument in favour of either route but an indicator of the costs needed to be considered, against the LPG usage one foresees.
I am well aware that using other than Shell and its forecourt competitors better prices for LPG can be found.
