Hi

Just received my copy of January 2017 magazine and note the contents on page 86 regarding the changes to duty in April 2017.

Just would like to check on the point that an owner of cars which had a list price of more than £40,000 when new pay £310 per annum on top of the standard  rate (£140) for 5 years.

I assume this applies to all vehicles that have been registered before April 2017? Please confirm my understanding.

This change in duty will I'm sure effect the sales of this kind of vehicle - Land Rover Discovery would pay duty in the 1st year £1,200, then £450 for the next 5 years.

Cars registred before April 2017 will be subject to the tax regime currently in place.  All this only applies to cars registered after that date.

We are already paying £490 for our Volvo XC90.   So the new regime will be similar. We are not rushing to buy a new car.

But you need to rush to beat the increase cool if buying a new car in the next 3 months.

The new Disco will get hit as deliveries aren't due to start until next summer.

At the £40k threshold, a lot of tow car size cars will get caught by this increase. Especially where company car policies 'dictate' the type of car an employee on a scheme be it leased, car allowance or direct car. Think all those XF, A6, 5 series lined up in the car park cos your status says you must have one!! Osborne stated when launching it that those who can afford a £40K car can afford the VED. Manufacturers are already increasing prices for the new year. Despite any 'offers', 'dealer deposit contribution' etc the VED is based on list price.

Factory fitted tow bars are a fair chunk. £950 for my new car, £2500 for the new Disco if the electric folding with 13 pin!!!

I'm sure people pay what the current tax code and laws demand cool it's just some can afford to find ways of paying very little, for which that  finders fee is deductible from any tax due foot-in-mouth

Good news for motorhome buyers from Swift. They have announced that none of their motorhomes, including those over £40000, will be subject to the new VED rates. I assume this will also apply to other main stream converters.

Just for the sake of balance Swift or rather the future owners of Swift Motor Caravans are subject to exactly the same Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) regulations as everybody else so there is no specific VED advantage in buying a Swift although it does sound like a slick piece of marketing by Swift.

The position is well explained (well fairly well explained because it understandably doesn't go into detail) in the January 2017 CC magazine and it concerns the recording or non recording of emissions on the V5C of the resultant motor caravan which is treated under a different VED regime. It is of course possible that HMG will see fit to modify the applicable regime in the future
