Burgh Island. Devon

We have just spent a lovely few days at the Modbury CC Club in Devon. Site and staff excellent. Weather cool but sunny and dry. The purpose of this little note is to report on Burgh Island, Bigbury Bay. We anticipated a good walk and visit to the island followed by either a coffee, beer or lunch in either the Hotel or the pub on Burgh Island.  Wrong. The Hotel will not admit anyone other than guests and the pub has a big bog off notice to say it will admit only Hotel Guests or regulars. Needless to say Burgh Island is off our coast walking list. Added to this the Bigbury Bay car park is quite expensive. Just to say this area of Devon is extremely beautiful, even on a cold widswept few days. Hospitality is great, Burgh Island excepted.

Hello Wandering Stars, most surprised to read your exprience at Burgh Island. We have been touring in that area for many years and have never been turned away from the pub (The Pilchard). Iff that is now their policy i fear word will soon get around and the
tourist trade to the island will suffer. It is to be hoped the owners have a rethink because, as you say it is a beautiful part of the country.

    Hello Venturer 1.

Yes, it is the Pilchard and from the notice outside I imagined it was also owned by the hotel.  We didn't attempt to try and get refreshments as the notice was very unwelcoming.
