You doin't always have to go far

Summer 2011, and things were transpiring against us for our annual summer holiday.  The Credit Crunch is biting and money is a little tight.  Add to that The Shogun needs a major engine repair costing £4k, without which it's incapable of towing any sort of distance and the odds were stacked against us.

During the early summer, herself's mam was taken quite poorly and admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties, and there was no sign of her coming out either.

We had time booked off from work, but understandably herself was reluctant to go away in the van, even though we were both desperate for a holiday.  Luckily where we live we are a very short distance from the Gower Peninsular, Britain's first ever area of outstanding natural beauty.

I persuaded herself that we could still spend our fortnight in the van if we chose a site on the Gower.  That was we would still get our break and we would be close enough for herself to make the daily trip home for hospital visiting.

We know the area well, so days out were not a consideration.  We wanted a site with a sea view, handy dog walks and reasonably priced with stuff for the boys to do while we were at the hospital.

Bank Farm at Horton came up with the goods.  It proved to us that you can holiday without having to travel miles and miles just to get there.

We spent a delightful 10 days watching the shipping in the Bristol Channel, walking the dogs and having BBQ in the sun and generally taking in the view.

I think many of us would agree with you now that money is getting so tight and diesel is now around £1.49 a litre.  That's the beauty of caravanning - you don't have to go far to have a wonderful time.  There are so many great sites there is bound to be
one fairly close to home where you can still have a wonderful holiday.

Ten miles or one thousand miles it makes no difference, you have the van in a brilliant location (we know the site0 so just enjoy yourselves.

    Hi Scarletsfan

Just read your story. I agreee with you that you don't have to travel afar especially when we have beautiful beaches etc. I live in your part of the country. Several years ago we booked into the Gowerton site initially for 3 nights as our intention was to
travel onwards into England. We ended up staying in Gowerton for 3 weeks. We were fortunate to do this due to cancelations etc. Not only was the weather glorious for almost all of our stay but we made friends with people from North Wales on one side of our
caravan pitch and another couple from England on the other side. It was pointless moving in the heat. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and my mother who was 86 even came for a few hours one day. We had afternoon tea outside the caravan as we sat her down in
the shade under the tree. A lovely time had by all.
