Never trust your SatNav

We were en-route to Scotland and needed a stop-over for the night, so we chose a lovely little CL just off the M6 near Preston (I won't mention the name - this wasn't their fault). I pulled off the motorway, beginning to relax and looking forward to a cuppa and settling down for the night, but I relaxed too soon!  The CC instructions said "50yds and site on RH" but the CL sign was obstructed by foliage and the SatNav was telling me it was another 50yds down the lane. So on we went, the lane getting narrower and narrower until we started picking up bird's nests on the towing mirrors. Every caravanner's nightmare!  Both mirrors had sprung back and one extension had fallen off completely, my co-pilot could even open her door to guide me back. There was no alternative but to reverse VERY slowly, praying there was no-one behind me (windows open to hear any horns blasting) until I found a gate, where we unhitched, pushed the van far enough into the field to reverse the car in there too then hitched up again. There's nothing worse than arriving at camp muddy, sweaty and covered in twigs is there?  I suppose you could say we'd been dragged through a hedge backwards - literally!  Anyway, after a shower, a cuppa and a good night's sleep we set off in the morning for a wonderful week in Stirling -that is after tee-cutting the sides of the car and van!

We're also off to CL near Preston later in the year, better keep the map books to hand!

Oh you poor things!  What a nightmare.  But thankfully you got yourselves sorted. Do hope it's not traumatised you!

Many of us have similar stories I'm sure, but ours isn't down to sat-nav, just poor navigating by me!

In defence of the sat nav it very much depends on what method you were using to find your destination. Post codes are not always reliable and POI's it depends where the co-ordinates were set. I suspect you might have been better served by having a look at
Google Earth before setting off to get a feel for the immediate area near the CL.

Ha yes I agree we have two sat navs, we are into our second week touring Europe for six months, first our sat navs took us into a small fishing village, grid locking the place, then on way to second site it took us through a tunnel with two  inches to spare
each side, so I sympathise with you.

My 'Sat Nav' was directing me to a CL in the Yorkshire Dales a couple of years ago when she suddenly realised she had been reading from the wrong CL in the directory...its great fun reversing into gateways!! Glad you arrived in one piece.

We tend to use the Garmin to get us to the area then the handbook takes precedence.

As you say, it wasn't the fault of the CL but members often ask for recommendations of stop overs in that area so it might help others if you do tell us the name and we can then keep it in mind to recommend in the future.

    Many Thanks.
