Stuck in the mud

We had a long day's drive ahead of us and we wanted to get off early in the morning. Unfortunately our plans were quickly scuppered. We got up in good time, had breakfast and packed away. We then reversed the motorhome towards the tarmacked road, initially succeeding to move out of our grass pitch but metres away from hard ground the front wheels began to sink into the rain-soaked ground; the previous night had been not only windy but very wet! We had seen another larger motorhome struggle the previous day and had hoped that it wouldn't happen to us. Not owning any anti-slip mats, we attempted to solve the problem of grip by scattering pebbles and bark near the wheels but the front wheels had well and truly made small troughs in the ground.
Luckily the French campsite managers came to our rescue. After explaining our situation, they braved the drizzle and attempted to push our van out of the mud, unsuccessfully. They then explained that their 4x4 with crane was at another site but that they had another that could pull us out. The two vehicles were attached and our motorhome was soon easily pulled out of the mud onto the road. We were soon on our way!
Lessons learned:
reverse onto the pitch for easier towing
consider buying anti-slip mats!

A good reminder. We have the mats after speaking with David Klyne in Ageless one time but have never had to use them so far. Did get stuck for a short time in the Pyrenees on a site road once after torrential rains in that area. It was quite an unpleasant
feeling that we would not be able to get out without assistance. Regards, Roy0 -
Sites at this time of year are not busy and perhaps the best option if you have any doubt about the surface of the pitch is to ask the site manage if you can park on one of the roads providing you are not blocking access to anyother camper.
