Following 2 weeks of almost constant gale force wind and rain with an occasional alluring day of sunshine, we finally decided to retreat from the wonderful north west of Scotland, back to where the weather forecasters assured us there would be a let up. Go east and slightly south, they suggested, so we did.

After a short stay on the Black Isle near Inverness we headed for Berwick and  Yellowcraig, a Caravan Club site just 2 miles east of the town and in the heart of Scotland’s golfing country.

Met by the lovely warden on our first sunny afternoon for quite some time, we asked for her recommendation of a quiet pitch and we got the ideal spot. She did warn us that there maybe a few rabbits around – she was certainly right.

OK if you are not keen on our little furry friends then this may not be the best pitch for you, but we loved it. Sitting in our rear lounge of our Burstner Marano t595, usually best  for people or scenery watching, not rabbits. However watching their antics was compulsive. I had a few favourites – theat one, no, that one…..but then got them mixed up. I tried to count them but they do have a habit of darting around! Fortunately their burrows were out of sight of Yellowcraig so there was no danger of subsidence!

But enough about the wildlife. This site has it all. It’s quiet, understated even, but with fantastic facilities. The local village of Direlton is 1 ½ miles away via a footpath, with a village pub serving some lovely ales and good food. The enormous beach at Yellowcraig is a five minute walk from the site and looks out to the Fidra lighthouse and is an excellent place to walk dogs and take children. It is full of rock pools and is fringed by dunes, behind which hide the many golf courses in the area, the most well- known being Muirfield.

Back to the rabbits - we managed our very first BBQ in nearly three weeks touring Scotland, and shared it with our new furry, silent friends. The wardens had erected Caravan Club signs warning of the dangers the rabbits might pose. We accepted the warning and loved this gem of a place.

Try this site, if you dare but I am not telling you which pitch we were on as we don’t want it to get booked up!

If youve turned into a rabbit fan, they head over to New England Bay. Plentiful and tame

We are on Lidalia at Newcastleton and this morning we sat watching a doe feeding one of her kittens. The kit would roll onto its back to get under the mother.

What a peaceful way to start the day!

    Great site.
