Today we set off from the Castleton Caravan Club site to set up our third YAFA (Young Ambassadors For Adventure) cafe - the aim being to raise money for local charity, Edale Mountain Rescue by making hot drinks to passers-by in exchange for a donation.

This is part of the girls enterprising education (as we tour the UK, home / caravan schooling them) in which they learn entrepreneurial skills associated with running a business. On two previous occasions, at the end of last year, the girls did their enterprising project in other locations: Kinder Scout and the Norfolk coast, each raising money for local charities. This time we chose our location carefully, having walked the ridge between Mam Tor and Lose Hill a few days previously. A crossroads of paths, not far from Hollins Hill seemed like the ideal location. The weather, although bitterly cold and windy was sunny and the skies were blue providing beautiful views of surrounding landscape. This would therefore mean plenty of walkers would be out and they were our customers.

We set off late morning with rucksacks laden with provisions that the girls had organised and bought a few days earlier. We walked a few miles up to our location and set up in a sheltered spot, not far off the popular path. Within minutes our first group of customers appeared and bought some coffees and teas. We stayed up on the hillside for about two hours, enjoying the Spring sunshine, serving tea, coffee and hot chocolate to anyone who passed. There was a wide variety of people on the hill and we passed the time of day with each as they took a break from their walks / runs.

When we returned we headed straight to the Caravan Club site office, the girls excited to count up their profits. After taking out expenses and combining  profits with the YAFA caf on Kinder Scout, the girls raised a grand total of £51.12. Witnessed by the caravan wardens, the girls dutifully pushed the money into the Edale Mountain Rescue collection tin, feeling very proud of themselves.
