They are supposed to have moved loads of files onto a new super server....or something like that, I've been told. So we'll have no more blank pages, won't we?

.... congratulations to the much maligned IT department

If the maligned IT dept were that good, would the forum have neded to be shut down at all ...... let alone all day

well as they said they were upgrading the membership system (which must be at the core of everything that requires signing on) - yes it probably did need to be down. The core of The club systems was(and I would think still is) SAP which is one of the worlds leading commercially available packages. I have never found a way to either move such systems to a different machine whilst keeping the old one going (tried mirroring it was a nightmare) OR updating a software release that requires a database rebuild that did not require an outage.

Ah! That explans it! I'm not IT savvy at all, but SAP at work is a PITA ...... why have one button press when you can have 10

What I think is different about the recent shut-down is that someone, somewhere (and possibly not an IT implementer person) has found the sense to (1) only allow one small (and hopefully easily reversible) change at a time, (2) tell the users it is going
to happen before hand and (3) advise them of a timescale that is quadruple the IT people's estimate.   That way we all feel happy in the end.

How long the site was off the net is fairly irrelevant....the fact that the forum returns with all the same old problems and failures makes you wonder if there actually is an IT department

but they never said they were doing anything to the forum indeed the stated policy is to replace it at some time with different software so why mess with it now? The club has a plethora of system beyond the forum, all of which is probably much more "mission
critical". The problem is that the membership part is key to signing on so any changes to that will require a forum outage.

Too many members running to Miss with pathetic reasons, OK if it's out and out abuse then fair play report it ,but as most people say the forum is not real life ,

How do you know the number of people who report others and how many people are the subject of reports? How do you know the reasons are pathetic? Pure supposition on your part, Husky, as none of us ordinary posters can possibly know.

Are you saying it's perfectly acceptable to break the T&Cs by being offensive to the staff/Champions?

Think carefully because if your answer is 'yes', you are dropping yourself into the mire. If your answer is 'no', then you have just negated your own statements re doing away with the report button. There is no middle way you either have the button or not.
You cannot suddenly invent it if a serious event occurs.

Don't forget, reporting someone means nothing regarding actions. The Forum manager will pour over the evidence & make a decision. The person reporting is merely flagging up a potential situation. Without a report button that is accessible then it actually
removes a vital link to potential justice & peace of mind. Using the word pathetic is unfair on anyone who uses it-plus it can be seen as very controlling in an intimidating way.

You did, indeed. It's completely your prerogative if you don't want to answer my questions in order to elaborate on your point of view so we can all fully understand your reasoning and logic.

As I said remove the report button and leave it to the Mods to police it ,if they see something wrong then they will deal with it ,isn't that what they are there for ?

cant say too much as we are not allowed to disscus moderation as per T&C's, but the you know that TWCool

That's not actually what you said before. I have no wish to discuss moderation of CT but to remove the report button would put an onerous task on the Champions who are already the butt of derogatory comments from some posters. They are volunteers, remember,
and certain actions need to be dealt with by management. The report button highlights issues directly to management - or would you rather that warnings and bannings were issued by the Champs instead?

Instead of a report button we could perhaps have a "chill" button that prevents any further posts on that thread for (say) 6  hours. Give folks a chance to chill out a bit and to remember its just a forum.

    Might save a punch upHappy

It's a thought Fysh, only trouble is six hours wouldn't be enough sadly. There are posts from years ago that are resurrected with a rant on here! Although most of the moans and groans are on a loop and just keep going round and round and round.......Happy

Well, I was recently reported twice, for two posts.

Once was when I commented on Nellie's thread about sites being quiet and there being more empty spaces than shown on the web site. I suggested that the wardens should look out of the window rather than at the computer. Reported.

The second was on the thread that ran onto the subject of bullying. Tinners posted asking why I was going on about it. I didn't post further but then after many more posts on that subject, I asked Tinners the same question (a word for word copy of his post).
    I was reported.

This isn't a criticism of moderation. It's a criticism of the over-use of tbe reporting button.

I agree Husky, it should be removed.
