Lake District coastal sites

Having had some good suggestions regarding potential sites from all you Forum contributors, here is another plea!

 

We are planning a Sept trip into the Lake District to do some hill ascents based at Coniston & Borrowdale, but would like to try & finish at a coastal site where the dog can run free after too many days on a lead.

Any recommendations for sites [CL/CS/commercial] that are on the coastline  - hardstanding & electric are a pre-requisite.

    The CCC site at Ravenglass is near the coast, though not a CL or CS

    the only coastal site I know is at st bees, cant remember the name but it has direct access to beach and great sea views. About 45mins from Keswick so would tie up with borrowdale.

    Go to site search under UK Holidays > cl's  > Cumbria and tick you preferences then Search

    Haven't stayed there but Old Kiln Farm, Allonby (CL 288) may suit you.  Only 200 metres from the beach.  Has EHU but only a couple of hardstanding strips for caravan/motorhome wheels.

    Meathop Fell CC Site?

    If you're heading south after your hill walking the small commercial site Gibraltar Farm at Silverdale (Morecambe Bay) is by the sea with lots of great coastal walks.

    gib is indeed nice BUT beach is not safe for man or dog and the cliff walks are dodgy unless your dog stays close and has faultless recall.

    How about the CS at Millom RUFC (page 309 in C&CC Book) site is actually at Haverigg, next to sand dunes and sandy beach.  Has EHU, but not hardstandings.  

    Wouldn't take too long to get there from Coniston Smile

    As far as I'm aware, there are no coastal walks direct from the Meathop Fell site?  Please correct me if I'm wrong.  

    I also agree with spk re Gibraltar Farm.

    you are correct Lynn, meathop is miles from anywhere really and even if you drive to grange I am pretty sure there are no beaches and we assume its beach that op wants. One has to remember that this area of Morecambe bay through Silverdale and over to ulverston
    is treacherous and even if a beach was accessible I for one would not be venturing onto it.

    Yes, it is treacherous. The tide comes in very fast and there is quicksand. The only safe way IMO would be to join an organised guided walk with Cedric Robinson (The Queen's Guide) who is an expert guide of the sands.

    I think the OP was thinking about a more leisurely experience Laughing

    exactly. Very few beaches in Cumbria or north lancs that's the problem. Op your better at st bees trust me, I know exactly what you want and why you want it and this is best if not your  only option, trouble is your going west when you prob don't want to.
    So take mutt to Keswick park instead, safe big environment there for off lead.

    Just to complete this thread!

    We are booked into Shepherds View at Torver - CS,  for some warm up walks around Coniston

    then the CC Borrowdale site at Manesty for the Scafell Pike ascent

    & finally to the C & CC Ravenglass site for the dog to have a good run on the beach.
