Now there is a surprise - shades of James Hunt

Would be nice if Jenson Button "un-retired" and took the seat but somehow I think it will not happen its probably time for new blood.

Will we see Vettel and Hamilton in the same team?

One wonders if he would have done so if Lewis had taken the championship.
There could be quite a shakeup in the drivers then. That's Button, Masa and Rosberg gone. Good opportunity for the GP2 wannabe's. Bernie's still hanging on though.

Just read the news, stunned. Clarity of thinking by Nico, great driver and great ambassador of the sport, sad to see him go but understand. We need to watch this space now.
If Mercedes bring in a rookie it could mean Hamilton will escape punishment for breaking team instructions.
I think Mercedes would like to bring in Vettel but only if they get rid of Hamilton. Hulkenburg is my outsider of choice.

I think he’s bottled out and afraid of the challenge in defending the title. A conspiracy theorist would think Merc have had a hand in this to ensure they keep the best driver, Hamilton.

I admire Rosberg for having the good sense to put his family first and quit whilst he is at the top. After all his future in now secured.
Oneputt, I understand your view but very much doubt that Mercedes would want to be without both their star drivers next season. The problem for Merc's is that pretty well all the best drivers are aleady signed up with other teams for next season. It might be better to take on and develop a real rookie whilst theyve still got Hamilton .

Agree a true Champion would want to defend his title, he just doesn't want to lose face next season. I for one will not miss his babyish sulks and temper tantrums. Now Vettel and Lewis would be a good combination. They have respect for each other and both
true champions.0 -

Alonso to Mercedes.
Please!

Put Max verstappen in the seat........
Now that would put the fox in the chicken coup.

Conspiracy theory Whittaker - Respect to Nico a great asset to F1
there's no doubt that Roseberg is a very good driver, but I wouldn't call him a great driver. He's not in Hamilton, Alonso or Vettal's league.

I think Red Bull will do all they can to keep Max and of course next year they could have race leading car. The problem for any driver thinking of making a move is that there are major rule changes for 2017 so its a bit of a gamble who might have the best car. Experience shows that rule changes always shuffles the pack and the team that was making the running one year is poor after the changes. Vettel thought he would win another championship at Ferrari but that has not happened.

When there are major rule changes Adrian Newey is usually the man to get the best advantage from them, so things bode well for Red Bull.

Could end up as a bit of a demolition derby if it was those two. They'd both take it to the edge and probably take each other out.

This is the
BBC's list of possibles for the job. What makes the choice more difficult, apart from the obvious of dealing with Lewis, is that it will be a totally new car so would probably suit a more experienced driver.David

I think Hamiltons comment tied it up succinctly:-
"Well he hasn't won anything else for 18 years"
But they are still good friends!
I suppose that sums up Hamilton more than Rosberg?
Interesting artical in the Guardian today about Nico Rosberg. It seems he is quite a technically talented driver. When he first went to Williams he had to do a technical aptitude test and apparently he scored the highest before and since. So it seems he
has provided Mercedes with a lot of help in developing the car even if he is not the best driver in the world?David

It looks as if Mercedes could well be signing Hamilton's old foe Fernando Alonso for next season's racing. That could well result in another stormy relationship!!

At that time though, Hamilton was the new kid on the block and in spite of that came within a whisker of winning the championship in his rookie season. They are both multiple champions now so one would hope there would be mutual respect.
