Dogs off lead
Quick question. I have read and respect the club rules on keeping dogs on lead on site., but if the site has a specific dog exercise area is it ok to let them chase a ball or have a good sniff around?
My 2 borderr Collies love being off lead in new places.

Some Club Sites have really good dog walks, such as Barnard Castle and Yellowcraig, lots of room, even with other dog walkers around. Some are only narrow little hundred metre paths, not fit for much in way of exercise. We let ours off on big areas, but
not on small paths if others around. Lots of sites are on estates or in woodland, you can walk for miles on these! Pick up as you go of course0 -
I would check with the warden of that site if it's ok to let your dog off lead , but also respect the needs of other users of the exercise area if their dogs need to be on a lead, if an owner is walking their dog at the other end of the area on a lead they
may not appreciate a dog off lead bounding up to theirs0 -
Unless you have FULL control of your dog then keep it/them on a lead....

um, interesting question.
first off I would not "exercise" my bitch in the dog toilet area (as this is effectively what a designated dog walk area is" I have exercised her in woods or grass at the back of pitch many times with no problem. Yes I know its against the rules but she
wont go anywhere she rarely has a lead on and never wears a collar, yep hang me now I know its terribleas Brian says it really depends on the dog and how much control you have

North York Moors site, near Whitby is another one with a large, enclosed area in the woods adjacent to the site. Meg had a lovely time off the lead chasing squirrels and rabbits when we were there a couple of weeks ago. Had to smile at the notice on the
gate into it, though - "Beware - uneven ground and tree roots in this area" - would never have expected that in a wood -of all places0 -
A bit off topic ,I was watching autumn country file this morning and it was said that even if walking dogs in the country to still pick up dog poo as it can carry "worms?"that can affect livestock? I did think at the time if Farmers are so vigilant with
their own dogs0 -
There is a vast difference between taking the dog to the site "Dog Walk" to let it poo and pee -- and actually taking the dog for proper exercise.
On site, including the dog poo area, dogs should be on a lead.
Exercising the dog off site involves going for a decent walk together. It will depend where you go for your walk ---- if in woods or open fields, it will depend on how well the dog is trained to voice commands -- but if there is any doubt its always best to use a lead.

Write your comments here...Wrong!! in dog walk areas there are no rules for having dogs on leads.......just down to personal preference and consideration for other users.

Absolutely correct k9sam. There is no rule about dogs having to be on a lead in the dog walk areas, although on sites where such areas are limited and not secure, it makes sense to do so. On sites (CC or otherwise) with large enclosed dog walks, ours get
the best of both worlds. A good romp before breakfast while Mrs M puts the beds away and sets up our breakfast, followed by maybe a 4 or 5 hour walk in the countryside where we're staying.0 -
Our routine is same M, decent walk in morning for necessities, then a proper walk in day. Ours go everywhere with us most of time anyway, unless they are just too pooped to go shopping!

So is ours....

We all know the difference between the dog walks on a site & taking your dog out for a walk. & Molly the Mutt is always off lead in the dog walk area

I thought the club site rules stated “dogs must be kept on a secure lead no more than 3 metres long”. Are you suggesting the dog walk area is not part of the site?

Yes ,I thought dogs had to be on a lead every where on site ,even the dog walk , maybe the club can clarify this
I 'd have thought any reasonable interpretation of "on site" meant the roads and pitching areas, and that is absolutely as it should be. I don't see the rule as including the dog exercise areas. Still, I stand to be corrected!

There seems to be a different interpretation of a "dog walk" and a "dog excerise area"
the area such as the one at M in the M then I would say it's ok to let your dog off lead ,but where they are just a narrow path then keep it on a lead
Eith way mine is always on a lead , you just don't let huskys off lead

All explained here, You can let them off, quite surpised at the responce from some on here? Seems people and their dogs are being judged by people who know nothing about them ?
Can't seem to get a direct link in the post so you will need to copy and paste it.

Yes, that was exactly the point I meant in the 4 examples of sites I gave in my first post.0 -

taken from above:-
Please keep your dog on a lead at all times while on site, except in designated dog walk areas where free roaming is permitted. Leads should be no longer than 3 metres (10 feet).

The rule states that you should keep your dog on a lead at all times -- Except in designated dog walk areas " Where free roaming is permitted".
Nowhere does it say that dogs can be let off the lead in all CC campsite dog walks. The individual site warden is the person to ask before ever allowing your dog off the lead on any part of a CC campsite.
If in doubt always use a lead.

Classic example of a poor Club Site dog walk area ( not a criticism of Club, it may be the only area within their ownership) is at Durham Grange. A scrubby nasty little tree lined path of around 100 metres, runs behind some of pitches at far side of site.
Everyone has to walk up and then back along this narrow footpath. It is ok for a quick wee and possibly a desperate poo if your dog will go while on the lead, but is only slight exercise even for a chihuahua! We would only let ours off lead on this walk if
no one else was around or using it, because dogs will meet each other, and some dogs (and owners) are nervous of other dogs. This is us showing respect for others. Luckily, just outside the Club Site is a footpath that leads eventually down to the river, fenced
off safely from busy roads. So we use this and let ours off to let off a bit of steam and do what they need to do. Picking up of course. Dog walks on Club Sites vary from excellent to none existent, we always check before we book any site.0 -
This is a post which should have gone in the UK Sites and Touring Section within the Caravanning with Dogs thread.
Unfortunately, we don't have the facility to merge a single post to another thread so I'll close this one.

Hi everyone,
Just had a response from Sites Operations on this; If the dog walk area is fenced off around the perimeter of the area, then this is classed as a designated free roaming area, where dogs can be let off the lead.
Hope this answers your questions
