As far as I am aware, there is no provision to enter Ordinance Survey coordinates into my Tomtom for routing purposes. Does anyone know of a GPS that does , or a website that converts lat and long to Ordinance Survey coordinates?

WHich way round afre you anting to convert ?

    Google is your friend.

There are varuous Android (and I imagine Apple) apps that will convert lat long to grid ref.

Websites that will convert also, eg

    http://www.bgs.ac.uk/data/webservices/convertform.cfm

Thanks. I was hoping that a GPS was capable of accepting the coordinates. Will do as suggested and look at Google.

If you are talking about Lat and Long coordinates, our Tom Tom accepts them. You need to search around in the menus a bit.....then you have to work out the format used.

Must admit, it took me a while to tind it, but it will be in there somewhere.....

I think the problem is the other way round. All sat navs do lat /long but not all do OS grid ref

Ian, I have figured out lat and long input. I was asking if any GPS accepts the Ordinance Survey grid reference. Thanks anyway. If I  can be of any help, instead of selecting 'Navigate to', go to Latitude and Longitude.

Not surprising the omission of the OS NGRs when most satellite navigation systems are made in the far East for the market in north America and the National Grid covers only the Great Britain part of the United Kingdom. However I do have one that uses them
as well. Unfortunately no longer on the market - and I got it from Australia!

I have three Garmin sets , One is a hand held GPS only, I link that to Memory Map on a Lap Top to track my position when traveling in a vehicle on unsurfaced roads .

The other two are GPS/Sat Navs. All three accept NGRs + Lat/Long. which is one reason I chose to purchased Garmin in the first place.

I am fairly sure most, if not all Garmin models provide this facility.

JD. You may be interested in looking at the website "Charles Close Society . org  Under the word "Navigation" select "Online mapping" then select "Current OS Landranger mapping" You can zoom in and out, move the map to your desired location and then zoom
in close. You will see that wherever your pointer is positioned, the co-ordinates in the top right window shows your location both as a Grid Reference and also as Long / Lat details. I have a small business in relation to GR's so know a little about the subject.

Thanks Buggy. Will look at the website. It certainly sounds good. Nav, I never gave it a thought about O.S. being Great Britain only! Fair point ( and obvious)

Why would you want to bother when you can download the Club Site POI's (Points of Interest) from this website and load onto your TomTom. It will save you a lot of time.

David, i dont thing the OP specifically had an issue with Cub Sites, merely the ability (or not) to use GR....I assumed this to mean other destinations.

however, if it is Club Sites (and other camping destinations etc) that are the issue, the. a POI file is the way to go.

loking at the club webpage for a site, it doesnt seem to give anything extra for location, other than the postal address and postcode...?

    so, no GR or Lat/Long.....

Both are available between the map and directions, on the site details page. Although personally I find it easier to use the postcode and then select reposition, to put the marker on the exact point. This is an available option on my sat nav but I suppose may not be possible on some models.

Steve, sorry youre right.....it was just a looooong way to scroll down the page.....i didnt look all the way down there.....Wink

like you, i use 'point on map' to locate most of my destinations, but for club sites, i use the POI file...

They do have a habit of not making things easy to find. All available with the address at the top of the page would seem to be the obvious place. Although I suppose they are by the approch directions. Which are perhaps more critical for us tuggers.

For those of us that still also use OS maps  it would be nice if the CC gave grid references for sites as well as GPS coordinates and postcodes. Neither GPS  nor postcodes allow you to actually find a place without an electronic aid, and postcodes often
    cover a very wide area.

As I mentioned above, OS grid references are available between the map and directions on the site details page. They are also available in the book, along with directions as BB mentions. They don't seem to be available on the app though.

    SteveL,

You are absolutely right, O/S Grid Ref is available for all CC Sites and all C/Ls listed under each site’s details, both in the CC Hand Book and on the Web-site.  I use it all the time to cross reference with O/S electronic & paper maps. I also use ‘bing maps’ I first identify the chosen location using O/S Grid Ref then switch to Arial/Birdseye to see exactly what the ‘site layout’ (or anywhere else for that matter) and surrounding area looks like.

Regarding directions to sights, I do take the trouble to read them as opposed to just typing post codes etc into the GPS as occasionally you are advised to ignore GPS.

They are notoriously inaccurate for CLs.  Not sure if the CL owner gives the reference or the club takes a referecne that is close by.  A correct grid reference should take you to the exact location of the CL and not one half a mile away.

Surfer. A very good reason to use lat and long (converted from Ordinance Survey grid reference then).

Neither Lat/Long converted to O/S Grid Ref  nor  O/s Grid Ref  to Lat/Long  or  either on their own are of much use,  unless quoted accurately in the first place.   Frown

Doesn't matter how much you pay for a Sat Nav. They are notoriously unreliable when it comes to finding a specific point, such as the entrance gate to a CL or Campsite. It can be a bit challenging if a Caravanner finds that when following their Sat Nav they
are on the wrong narrow road and have to retrace their steps.

Much better with a good O.S. Map and Compass and the ability to use both. --Cl's and campsites also help by giving recommended routes, and mini maps to find their campsites.

    Cheers.............K

K, nothing to do with the satnav, everythjng to do with where its been told to go....

if its a wrong lat/long or GR or bad POI file, the unit will do what its told to do...

which is why i very often use 'navigate to point on map'...then its my fault if wrong.

when using my POI files for destinations, i alway check the route to see that the route is where i want it.

entering large numerics (like lat/long or GRs) can also be fraught with fun...

an E instead of W, or N instead of S.....or even + when it should be - will have us driving all over Europe by mistake...

so, check the route on the unit, no matter what method id used to enter the destination.

    no substitute for common sense.Happy

Must be the Luddite in me, but I never, ever use sat-nav to get to any site, especially a CL. I write out the directions given by the site itself and memorise them. If in any doubt near the site, I'll stop and use an OS map. Never failed me yet! Happy
