Wot no peg!

Every site is "regimented" to some extent, as they are all rows of caravans and motorhomes.
But I still cannot see the problem with being well seperated from your neighbour.
Quite the reverse......I can see many advantages.
Not being burned to death is one that is high on the priority list........a bit of privacy is also important.
Ian, I dont quite agree with your first sentence! One of the reasons that I love CL's so much is the almost total lack of regimentation. Most CL owners are happy for you to pitch any which way you wish. The DCOS is a bit of a sun loving Lizard (Dont tell her I said that) and her standing orders require me to pitch in such a way as to maximise the sun for her. So CC Club site regimentation is a total switch off!

Hurrah for this thread! Thinking about camping in the forest has made me realise that we need to revisit Beddgelert! I know the CitF sites are linked in with C&CC, does membership of C&CC get you a discount on prices showing on CitF website, or are they
the same? If anyone knows please enlighten me. Don't want to rejoin C&CC unless we have to, as we use few of their sites in truth. Happy to book direct with CitF if prices are the same.0 -
Thanks Brue, will take a look later. I didn't spot. C&CC discount on the CitF website.

TDA, with online membership at £37, it wouldn't take many nights to get your money back ......
Write your comments here...You will also double the number of 5 van sites that you have access to, and, have access to their brilliant THS sites.

We used to be members, in fact we still have our big book, and use it for Listed Sites. You don't need membership to use these. Used one or two nice CS sites as well in past. I can't find details of any membership discount for CITF sites, but if it is worth
it, we will rejoin. At moment, a pitch at Beddgelert is coming up as around £18 per night for us, with EHU, and knowing what it is like, that to us is very good value. So much to do there, with railway, walks, cycling, and decent on site facilities. We want
the quiet months, as this site is rammed full in holidays. Just a bit of a trek, around four hours from where we live. Sadly most we would be away would be five days, but given that we managed South Wales last year, it is do-able! I have emailed C&CC for a
bit of help.New Forest is on our list for when we can manage longer breaks!

I find it amazing that people make so light of pitching too close to their neighbours.
In the example of the fire at Broadway, the units were apparantly the requisite distance apart........but the heat from the fire still melted the bumpers and the rear panel of the adjacent unit.
Imagine what that would have done to 'face to face' awnings only 3 metres apart?
I assume that all the people above who make light of correct spacing and make comments that there really is no problem with being pitched on top of their neighbours (and have so far been lucky that their neighbour hasn't caught fire and also destroyed their
own unit, or worse, killed them) are the same people who sit right next to you on an empty beach.Get over this herding instinct.......it could kill you......and for no gain whatsoever!
The gravel that is 3 metres nearer to your neighbour really is no better than the gravel next to the peg. Try to get over your complex about "being told what to do", grow up a bit and just do what is sensible.

the same as awning to car or car to car. In fact I'll take an awning on fire to a car on fire. All that plastic, paint, oh and that stuff called petrol. A car is far more dangerous and has a far higher fire loading than an awning. But as M says, the club operates this way and if you feel it is dangerous then don't go.

We've witnessed the peg being moving by a 'pitcher'. Are they regularly measured?
I have no desire to be close to neighbours on site - I find the pitches are plenty close enough to each other on CC sites.
On many sites now the peg position is marked on the ground by a yellow disc, so the wardens can easily see if the peg has been moved.

So what Ian is saying, is that we risk life and limb every time we stay on a caravan site, tomorrow I'm going to get measured for a fire proof suit
Well far less chance if you are correctly spaced apart.
Please explain your strange desire to be closer to your neighbour than necessary??

But parked cars, without the engine running, don't burst into flames.
On the other hand, a cloth, non fire resistant awning with heaters, cookers, live electrical items and people walking around in them (and the risk of knocking over the aforementioned) is far more likely to catch fire.

They can do. A freinds twin neices were in their parents' (her brother) car asleep at the back of their shop and the car went up in flames. The fire was discovered before any harm to the kid was done but the car was gutted

See the pricing guide on my link to Aldridge Hill TDA, it covers discounts etc. (Including C&CC member discount at 15%)
Worth noting that the CitF Age Concession discount (20%) is available to
anyone over 60 - you don't need to be a member of C&CC - and is of course better than the member discount (15%). Sadly, you can't have both
.... though you CAN combine with the mid-week discount.0 -
Ian, I don't desire to be close to my fellow campers ,but in my OP I was just saying that on this site (setthorns) there were no pegs ,but every one was pitched at more than 6 meters from each other with out the need of a white piece of wood to aim at
On the next pitch to us there were two ,yes two cars on the same pitch, but they were more than 6m away from us , and we all
survived the week .................0 -
But as you said earlier Ian ,the fire at Broadway damaged the next unit and they were both on the peg ,so even that distance is not safe ,, to be honest the unit pitched next to me that might burst in to flames at any point is not high on my list of concerns..

Another consideration at setthorns is the scrub like brush of the forest floor that the whole site is laid out on. If ever there were a fire risk, that'd be it. Anyone any record of fire there, or other New Forest campsites?
Nope, didn't think so.
Often brushland fires near connerbations where bored yoofs get pi55ed up and light fires, smash glass bottles, discard fag ends etc. Maybe its a different kind of user camping in the woods or
the environment tells you to treat it with respect without roolz written outTis a lovely setting, as are the other CiF sites.
