Have done most of our jobs at home and if all gets sorted out tomorrow we could well be heading off for our X-Mas trip before the end of this month.Laughing

Flipping eck! you must never go to bed Laughing we've still got loads to do yet, mind you the van is now empty waiting to go up to
dealers. We won't be going away in it again until the New Year as we are off on a cruise for Christmas.

I have got some painting to do but will wait till the spring to do that, as it's too damp at the moment, and days are dark. Enjoy your X-Mas Cruise. Where are you heading?

Seems to be that since our last trip at end of September The last 6 weeks have been nowt but appointments. 15 medical appointments and 4 at banks etc plus a boiler service oh and an eye test. In 30 week days I have had 20 appointments. Mind you I do tell
the hospital when I am not available and they schedule for when I am at home Happy

Always avoided cruising, especially on those huge floating blocks of flats. But the DCOS wants to indulge.

So I think St Petersburg of the Fiords might be OK.

    Advice?

I've done both those trips and would recommend them. I am not keen on the mega ships either. Fred Olsen have smaller ships and do some trips from Avonmouth so that would be convenient for you.

weve been on very large ships and also on the smallest P&O boat, the Adonia, which was really nice....adults only.

we did one trip right out to Turkey this summer and really enjoyed that, and winter in the Caribbean is also worth doing (warmWink).

we also did the Fjords one summer, but the weather was a bit off and we didnt get the full spectacle, but it was somewhere we had wanted to go....

with most of the first 6 months already earmarked for 2017 with two long trips in the van, i guess any cruises will be towards the back end of the year.....ill have to check the brochure....Happy

The outlaws always book as soon as the brochure comes out, at the travel agents. They pay top price.

My mother always goes on a whim and pays bottom price for the same cruises.

If you are not on a timetable tied to annual leave roolz, it makes sense.

We did a QM2 transatlantic from New York a few years ago. Total luxury and no communications, bliss.

We have been on two cruises with P&O and every much enjoyed them. The latest one was to the Fjords in July of this year and I wrote a story here about the trip. On that trip we were on Brittania their largest ship but you rarely get the sense that it is that large!!! Might be some advantage in poor weather to be on a larger ship. A lot of the cruise lines are priced in dollars so not so good value at the moment. Our two cruises have been booked through Bolsover Travel (other booking agents available)  and they usually offer a range of discounts. Depends on how long you want to go for on a first cruise. Fjords seven days, St Pertersburg fourteen usually. Its worth giving it a try but be prepared for it to be a bit of a Marmite experience, either love it or hate it.

Sorry just got back to this thread.

We are off on a Southern Caribbean cruise this time its our 11th cruise I think.

Like Cyber we've been on all differant sizes of ships from small and cosy to huge and plush. They all offer something diffferant. We don't choose our cruise by the company that we will be travelling with, (some snobs do) we choose the area first then look
    at what is on offer.

We have been with Cunnard (Panama cruise) Costa, Royal Caribbean, Airtours and Thomson.

This cruise is with Thomson on their' new' to them ship, it was formerly Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas (I believe)

Fly out from Newcastle on this one, arriving home on Boxing day. We haven't done the Fjords or the Alskan cruise yet but it is on the cards.

If I was to give any advice to anyone who hasn't cruised it would be to do your homework really well. There are lots of ships and companies out there to choose from, so take your time and make sure it is the right one for you, as they don't come cheap. We
have spoken to people who say "oh tried it its not for me" when you get talking its usually more about it was either in the wrong place, or they had chosen the wrong type of ship/company.

I did the Baltic trip as a last minute jobbie. It does save a fair bit of cash although even then you burn a fair bit of cash in a short time. I'd quite like to do the Alaska trip but, as Southampton is only fifteen minutes away, the OH resists the idea
    of fly-cruises.

So do I, it is much more convenient to drive to Southampton and do a return trip from there.

Come on be more imaginative, you get the relocation cruise going out in Nov. instead of flying back from Miami at the end of the cruise you stay there until it relocates back to Southampton in April.Wink could
hire an RV and have lots of fun.Laughing

Make sure you don't use P&O then becuase the airfares are inclusive and you cannot just purchase a cruise only.

What! not even direct through P&O? of course there are always other cruise companies, not a lot from Southampton I must admit. I might be wrong but don't some of the Royal Caribbean ships sail from thereUndecided

BB sailing across the Atlantic at the begining of November shouldn't be chilly, but you could catch a late hurricaneWink

Our transatlantic crossing on the QM2 was in November, still as a pond, one day I was swimming in the upper deck outside pool Happy

If you are going to hire a RV or MH, then go to New Zealand in the New Year for a few eeeks as their autumn arrives. We did NZ for my 50th, but in hotels. Beautiful place. Emirates do offers on flights in January. We got Business Class LHR/DXB/SYD/AKL/BNE/SIG/DXB/LHR
that included a weekend in the Atlantis on the Palm and chauffer service in each stop over city. Worked out at 11p per mile Tongue Out

Did similar for Mrs 50th but only to Oz at 9p per mile.

You only pass this way once.

We do a big long haul holiday of around a month every 5 years. We set a per diem amount, fly Business Class, stay in reasonable accomodation as we only sleep there, hire a car and get out and about. The other 'rule' is 'turn left' when we reach a junction
and are unsure where to go, we've found some amazing things to see and do that way.

The next one will include Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Maldives.

Final night away for 2016 this weekend.

Managed 50 nights this year, not bad with a 1year old baby and a 6 year old. A record for us in the 3 years we have been caravanning, hoping for more nights in 2017.

Just off for our X-Mas trip so another 32 nights to go this year all being well, which will be a total of 255 for the year. Still less by 4 from last year's total.
