As a child a Thompson Glen something, towed with a mk11 cortina, water foot pump gas lights no heater although there was a gas tap on the floor Bucket and chuck it toilet
As an adult 1990 avondale perle Argos towed with a 1.8 Diesel Mondeo. Not hot water tip up sink over porta potti. If anyone says design hasn't come on don't believe them.

My first van was an old astrol, about 10 foot, gas light,2 burner & grill but I was 1 of the few with an oven, water with a handpump, a single strip light,power was from the car through pin 2, which is now for rear fog lights, I had an old elsan which I
kept in the wardrobe, glass windows making it heavy.I towed with a marina van which was underpowerd, you could tow at 50 M.P.H. if you had a 50 sticker on the back of the van.
But 39 years later I am still towing

It meant 50mph was your max speed limit and it was a legal requirement to have the sticker.0 -

Mine was a Lunar too , forget the exact planet name and was towed with a Datsun Violet.
Like most at the time it had no 240 volt or fridge and a foot operated pump, glass windows etc but we took it to the South of France on our second year and thats it miraculously (that we found anywhere to park) parked up at the side of the med

Our first caravan was a Lissett (can't remember the model), which had a wooden floor, a Bucket & Chuck toilet, gas mantles, & a foot water pump, no shower or fridge. I think that we towed it with a Marina. That would be over 40 yrs ago.

First caravan was a 1976 Elite 13/4, built by Elite Coachcraft, Bridlington, at that time the price was £1,400 aimed at the mid-upper luxury market, we paid £500.00 in 1987 for it, then sold it for scrap for £500.00 (lots of damp) so first 2 years free caravanning.
It was towed by a 1.3 Ford Escort Estate.

Our first Caravan was an Eccles Topaz, second hand in 1980. Gas mantle, 2 ring gas hob, foot pump for water (cold) toilet was a blue bucket thing. Metal framed windows, no heater, no fridge. Roof of caravan was Vinyl over wood. Tow car was an Audi 100

My first van was a 1980 Eccles Topaz bought in 1986 for £2k. Portapotti, fold down washbasin, footpump and no 240V. Electric was provided by the 12S socket. Towed initially with a 1.6 petrol Sierra and later by a 1.8 petrol Mk1 Mondeo. Sold it ten years

First caravan was a 1971 Eurocamper 4 berth which was less than 10ft long had a manual water pump, no draining board , no toilet compartment, gas light and only a two burner hob. Bought second hand in 1974 together with Salou awning. Sold back to same dealer two years later without awning for £275 which was same as we paid for it with awning. Towed with Morris Marina 1300cc.

ET/Cyber although we bought in 1980 the van was probably a 74/75 model. White vinyl roof, no mains or 12v. We took it out to Germany in the July of 1980 when we got posted there 2 months after buying it. OH put in a 12v system and mains. Went to Italy in
it the following summer feeling very posh as we had also bought an awning and a portable chest type fridge and portapotti. 3 years later the vinyl on the roof split while on site in Italy, only found out on the last day of holiday

the van back to Germany (Detmold) where OH and I spent all one weekend in an aircraft hanger stripping and replacing the vinyl, van lasted another 2 years before we let it go. Cost initially was £500 never
had such a good bargain since.0 -
You live and learn! It was a very light van though for its size. They were in those days!! Soon after that and nothing to do with it, that car decided to self ignite in the drive!! Unfortunately, it was a covered drive with bedrooms above- I can't remember the 1 second between leaving the dining table and opening the up an over! I pushed the car into the road where it merrily burnt!! The neighbours busied themselves with moving their cars at least 50yds away. Fire brigade were very good thank goodness!! That's when I decided that British Leyland was finished .........and it was!!

I had a new Swift Pirouette - must have been in the early 80's and I think I was towing it with a Talbot Solara. We had some lovely holidays then and thoroughly enjoyed it although nowhere near as big and as luxurious as the present U3 Barcelona! When
I hear comments about build quality, I have to smile - it developed a serious damp problem when it was just over a year old and just out of warranty (no extended warranties, then) - so nothing's changed - or has it? Because I lived about 15 minutes away from
the factory at the time, (and the dealer from which I bought it was miles away) I rang Swifts to tell them what had happened. Without the slightest hesitation, the chap I spoke to told me to bring it in and they would take it apart over the winter and re-seal
it, free of charge - which they did. Don't suppose you would get that sort of service today0 -

We bought an old bailey maru from Michael Jordan, where he sold vans in a field. Towed with A Wolsey 16/60 auto. Van had no toilet or electric. But the boys loved it.

We had a Maxi once, and towed with it. I used to quote that there were two types of Maxi owners; ‘Those who’d had a gearbox failure and those who were going to have a gearbox failure’. It’s concept, with fold flat seats, an extra gear and load capacity was excellent. It’s implimentation, appalling. So too was our primitive, leaky Fleetwood Colchester caravan, lacking everything bar a two ring hob. But as an introduction to the activity I’ve been hooked ever since.
