I've never really thought about it. We just automatically tie it on when we arrive on site. It looks better with it on!

Ok more correctory put if You wear a shower cap correctly Your hair doesn't get wet . It's the same as the caravan hitch , protection is good .

    Paul

True but if you walk around in the rain without your shower cap, your hair gets wet!

If you do not like advertising where you bought your caravan, there are places that do a personalised hitch cover with your favourite photo or flag on it.

Always wipe down hitch and fit. It keeps 13 pin plug clean and dry and protects the ATC LED. Can't see any reason not to fit, area under cover is well ventilated from beneath, and always clean and dry when we remove.

Write your comments here... Agree with SteveL. Mine was given free by the dealer (yes it advertises them) and it is no effort to fit so why not?

Never really thought about whether it protects plugs etc - just bung it on because it looks tidier than havind various leads dangling. No effort to do so seems an obvious thing to do to me! Happy

I haven't read all of this thread so forgive me if it has been said before but when I did the Club's caravan course a good few years ago, the instructors advised it was better not to cover the hitch. I never did and in 13 years of caravan ovwnership I never had any problems. Perhaps if you live in a seaside environemnt where the salty atmosphere may do damage then there might be a case for a hitch cover otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I cover mine because I think that the ATC led is prone to water damage

I cover mine every time because I've got into the habit. It only takes a few seconds

I cannot see what damage they can do and they must protect the hitch and plugs to some extent and to me they look neater.

Always fitted one to keep hitch etc clean and dry - always used one 'given/bought' whenever we got a new van but last one disintegrated. Made mistake of buying a 'cheap' alternative (think it was around £8) and this is already full of holes and ready for
    replacement. Serves me right!!

I always thought it was to protect your hitch & security lock from adverse weather conditions , not to say free publicity for those nice people who supplied your pride & joy .........or am I missing something

Apart from covering the hitch when on site!

At least 90% of caravans arrive on site and religiously cover up the occassionally damp hitch area with a cover. This can be after travelling a number of miles in wet weather which leaves the hitch, handbrake, jockey wheel and breakaway cable wet and dirty.
Rather than letting air circulate these components, they are covered up. Why?

Can anyone provide a good reason for these covers?

Write your comments here...the only possible use is to conceal the make and type of anti-theft devices under the hitch cover, so as to suprise the potential thief. Could be a hungry Rottweiler under there !

No idea, but maybe they are intended to stop people getting grease on themselves should they accidentally brush against it ?

just made that up....but can't think of any other good reason.

Of course - with the hitch covered, whilst in storage over winter, it saves green algae spreading all over it. Keeps it clean.

We had one stolen while the van was in storage. A sad reflection on someone needy.
