Van Insurance Saga -vs- CC

I've searched the forums here and read most of the insurance related posts - so apologies for posting yet another Insurance related one.

We pick up our new caravan at the end of month and we are new to caravaning.

We have been quoted £413 by CC  Also quoted £330 with Saga (excludes EU but that is OK as we will stay in UK for the first year). I also got quotes from a couple of comparison websites, their quotes started at £280 but I didn't recognise the names of the companies and cheap is not always best - especially when you have to make a claim (which I hope I won't ever need to).

So I am not asking whether either is good value - rather what I am asking is - Do you have any experience of making a claim for your Caravan with either Saga or CC ??

(BTW - a few years ago we had to claim on our house insurance after a major incident, so we know all about the worry of whether they'll pay; whether they'll honour their new-for-old promises and ease versus agro of gaining settlements - so we won't economise on Caravan insurance) - Thanks in advance for your help

You could also try the CCC for a quote. You do not need to be a member

We have in the past had 2 claims with CC for our caravan and both times they paid up without a quibble.  Also had a claim with SAGA for a car insurance and again no quibble.

I am paying something like £230 with Saga as compared with a quote from CC of over £400 and apart from the EU cover being an extra with Saga, I can't see any difference in the level of cover. Both are Defaqto 5* rated.  This is for a new van and equipment
    valued at approx £25k.

I did earn a lot of discounts for various security measures and when I queried why Saga's quote was so cheap, I was told that it was because I was the "right age"!Happy

I will also be interested in reading of other member's experiences.

I have never insured a caravan with SAGA, that was always with the CC. However I did insure my car with them as they have a generous European cover. One thing to watch, if its the same with caravans, is the renewal premium often goes up substanually after
a heavily discounted first year. That is fine if you don't mind shopping around every year. Because the CC have a no claims bonus system the premium often stayed the same or went down a bit.

Saga apply a NCB as well.  I am now in my second year with them and paying less than I did last year.

Write your comments here...Thats why we left them for home insurance, practically doubled the quote at renewal.  Idid stay with them for car insurance because of the EU cover but got miffed when I sold the car to get the M/H and they charged me £50 fee to
cancel so they will not get my MH business on principle....

Recently had a motor claim with Saga and they dealt with it very professionally.

I will probably be looking at the Saga caravan policy when mine falls due later this year as I left it too late last year. Even with Eurpoean cover it was over £100 cheaper than CC. Only problem I could see related to the theft conditions whereby I would
need to buy a wheel clamp on their approval list. I didn't have time last year. They expect the theft protections to be put on each time van left unattended whereas CC give you some leeway of a few hours.

Both are defacto 5 star rated but the CC policy did have a bit wider cover when I checked them bnoth but not a lot. Never had a claim with SAGA so cannot comment on their service but they have a good reputation but with the CC the claims service was unbeatable.

If you look up the Ombudsmans statistics the latest shows only 23% of complaints were resolved in favour of the complaines which is very low meaning customers probably have very little to complain about given the average is 35%.

The CC policy does not appear so I cannot quote a figure for them.

TerryFlech - good idea - I have just got a quote from CCC £340 - interesting and encouraging and includes some EU cover - now to compare policies in detail .....

MichaelT - it is good to hear that both CC & Saga settled without quible - encouraging - thanks for the feedback

RichardandRos - watch this space ....

DavidKlyne - unpredictable renewals - sounds like my car insurance every year - it can be a game!! LOL

Deleted UserUser - sorry to hear your travel insurance claim was stressful - useful feedback thanks for the info.

Wherenext - yes we are going to study the policies in detail now

Wildwood - Ombudsmans Stats - useful resource I was overlooking - thanks I will take a look...

All - the major claim I referred to was regarding our home contents and buildings insurance, we had cover with a major top brand/household name - they paid in full but we had a few very stressfull months - my lessons learnt was I glad we were well covered
(in other words make sure your insured values are up to date), keep receipts and photos of - well everything really !! and lastly we were so glad that both policies (buildings + contents) were with the same company - it made laibility straighforward - I would
never split these. Anyway, back to caravans - more claims feedback on Saga, CC & CCC please .....

    A timely post, thank you.

Got our renewal the other day, but I'm not happy being forced to use Tracker and their fees just cos it was fitted to our caravan by the manufacturer. I have a car with tracker fitted that was a one off payment and lifetime cover, that was in 1998. I now
want to put that device in the caravan as the car insurance doesn't mandate the Tracker.

Current insurer insists on Tracker or similar devices.

I rang SAGA as the online form crashed. They will insure without tracker for a comparable premium to the renewal. So unless I get a better quote, looks like they will get my business.

Since filling in my details on another insurance site I have been inundated with telephone calls bettering the quote onilne. Interestingly when reviewing the terms of one family caravan policy it excludes  under 16 and over 75 years old. The accident cover
didn't cover accidents inside the caravan. So it pays to read the detail Tongue Out

I am insured with cc and when i had a minor accident in 2013 rang them and was told if less than £500 go ahead and get repaired, if more they would need a quote, exellent service in my opinion

SELL - yes that is a useful facility to get cheaper issues fixed without having to confer with the insurer. Interestingly I can't find anything like that explicately stated in the CC policy documentation but it is detailed in the CCC's insurance document
so all CCCs policy holders enjoy that facility. Thanks for sharing

Well we have read the policy docs of all 3 (Saga, CC & CCC) and CCC seem the best fit for us and strongest contender - anyone else insured with them and have any good or bad feedback in terms of making a claim ? - Thanks in advance for your help

Cannot fault the CC on the one claim I had with them.

If you use the Ombudsmans statistics use the page with the percentage of complaints found in favour of the client. This needs to be low showing that the company was generally right as there are always baseless complaints. A high percentage found against
    the company suggests bad service.

The numbers of complaints page does not give you a fair comparison as lt does not take account of the size of the companies, so is meaningless.

Saga are rip off merchants, my late Mother had her home insurance with them, when I phoned them to say she had passed away, they told me they can do the probate for me at a fee od over £3000.00   it didnt cost me £500.00

when you have just lost a loved one the last thing you want is them with their over priced fee for probate

With SAGA but  not had a claim.Be aware this year they have started adding fees for changes, renewal  adminstration., etc. Queried and they removed for car. When house came up they were much harder but got discount but not removal of renewal admin. This
seems to be a growing trend. Direct Line tried it with one of the major B/Socs, who then promptly dropped them from their panel, so may be short term trend. Insurance is always in the smallprint,

We have had our caravan insurance with the CC for many years now and I can only speak from personal experience when we had to make a claim.  Back in 2009 we had our caravan stolen.  The CC insurance were sensitive and efficient in the way they handled our
claim and we had no quibble at all.  Although I wouldn't wish it on anyone, we couldn't have expected more help and support at this time.

This is something you need to be aware of when comparing policies as if you anticipate a change then it needs to be fasctored in. My car is on an on line policy, if I notify changes by e mail there is no charge, but I get one if I ring to make the change.
Not had to make a change yet so not unsure how it will work out.
