Swift Escape Drain smell
i have a Swift Escape 622 2016 Motorhome and have noticed that after a day away the drains ( Bathroom & Kitchen Sink ) start to smell . I know when you are on site , you can drain into separate carrier ( Wastemaster) but what about wild camping ? Where it's
stored in onboard Tank ? . Do I use some form of disinfectant ? Flush through regular ? Are there traps on each drain ? Or is this normal ? Any help appreciated .

Hello and welcome to CT.
This a topic that has been raised before and I have put web addresses for the two threads I was able to find. There are probably more but the search facility isnt much use on this site so I went in via a search engine. Don't know if they will help,
haven't read them through. Sorry I don't know how to make them live.We have a motorhome but haven't had this issue, we do use ours for everything so its not that its only clean water that goes down our pipes. We got an Elsan grey water tank freshener free when we bought organic toilet fluid a few years back. Naturally we
occasionally used it, but we have never purchased any. I did use soda cystrals at the end of our trips sometimes, they are cheap ?.Our water tank is underneath. Yours may be in between an inner and outer floor???

i guess ypu only want to drain into a separate container if you want to empty at regular intervals....your on board tank will/should last you three days....a couple using on board showers....longer of using site showers....
so, depending on how long you are on site, you may not need to use a separate container....and therefore not carry one, which is a pain unless you have good/spare storage...
so back to the 'smell'....try adding a Lidl/Aldi gel non-bio washing pouch into the waste tank....the. repeat for the next few fill/empties.....it will keep the tank clean and fresh....
of the smell os coming from the sink plug hole, youll have to check how the traps are....from underneath....

Keep the plugs in when travelling !!

This is a well known issue, caused by Swift (and others) not incorporating a U-bend into the plumbing. This allows smells to come up from the waste tank.
Only two solutions: keep the plug in all the time, or modify the waste piping to incorporate a U-bend.
Depending on how the pipework runs, if you can get at it it's an easy job. Albeit one that shouldn't need doing.

If you like lying on your back underneath the motorhome the waste pipes are fiited with quick-release traps in several places. As they are shaped like a bowl they can store dirty water. Your waste tank, slung underneath at the rear, has a large removeable
drain cap in the centre and you could use a hose pipe to wash out.0 -
i used to wash out the waste tank on our Bolero by using this method....beware that you will get very wet as the water will cascade back out of the underneath 'hatch'....

We then drove to our next site. Once
on site we went to the MVSP emptied the tank and flushed it through with the hosepipe. Smell went and we have done this once every couple of weeks since. We did find the smell was worse when we were emptying the waste into a container all the time rather
than using the waste tank and emptying it every 3 or 4 days.0 -

You will also find that they use plastic pipe with ridges in it. This allows them to bend it round corners but it also lets rubbish collect in the pipes. Difficult to remove unless you can find some way of blocking the pipe off and then putting some cleaning
chemicals down.0 -

Another good way of cleaning the waste tank is to pour a couple of bottles of cheap Cola down the waste after you've emptied tank.
You'll be amazed at what comes out when you open the drain at home.
Makes you wonder what it does to your insides

We did that years and years ago with our caravan where the waste used to smell if left for any length of time. We just bought extra 'corrugated' pipe and OH configured it into a U shape which could be disconnected. We used to put 'drain unblocker' down it at the end of a stay somewhere, and it always kept the smell away.
Now we don't use the caravan water supply, and therefore waste, as much, we no longer have a problem.

Thanks for all the replies , thought it was something I was doing wrong . Will now investigate U bends ( or lack of them ) and flush system , also start to use some kind of Bio Disenfectant .

I get the hose into the waste tank and give it a good woosh round, also put the hose into the outlet of the waste pipe so cleans from both ends.
On a different note, does adding any of these additional tabs/cleaners take away the 'grey water' status?

The gray water status will remain unless bodily fluids actually pass into the tank. Your waste water tank will contain all sorts of disinfectants and surfactants. This will come form your normal daily washing up chores as well as bathing etc.
