We are planning a trip to north and southern Ireland in 2017 for approxiametley 3 weeks.  Would be very interested to hear from anyone that has done this from this country and at what time of year you travelled. We are interested in hiring motorhome/campervan large enough and comfortable for sleeping 2. Looking at having the 2 of us to share the driving. We could fly or take the ferry which ever would be cost effective. Can anyone make any recommendations. Many thanks  Kathy

    Hello Kathy,

It's not clear whether you want recommendations for routes and/or places to stay or the pros and cons of hiring a vehicle so, as you're planning on visiting both northern and southern Ireland, I've moved your thread into Caravan and Motorhome Chat Section which should allow people of offer their advice on the various aspects of your proposed trip.

I expect this post will be moved to a different section - but I would do lots of online research to show up your options - if you are planning on going this year you may be restricted to after the school holidays for availability of a MH.  It might be cheaper to hire in this country and catch a ferry - but research will tell you.  Ireland is a wonderful place for touring - another consideration could be the value of the Euro against the pound.  When I was there a couple of years back it was well worth crossing the border to fill up with diesel and pay in Euros but that may change with the Referendum.  The Euro might also be a consideration when deciding to hire in the North or the South.  Visit Ireland will have heaps of info for you.  Not being a motorhomer I can't help much more although I found there were some roads on the narrow side for the caravan - then again with just the car I found some wonderful places I wouldn't have taken a motorhome to!  Making sure your mobile phone will work "abroad" is a good move - I had to call a vet in the South and discovered I couldn't use my mobile.  Have a wonderful trip

Many thanks. I was  interested to hear if people have hired motor home/ campervans once in Ireland and if that is more cost effective. Good point about the narrow roads though, as per Pippa, the size of van must therefore be taken  into consideration. We
don't plan our trip until 2016. Doing lots of research as you suggested but others opinions always welcome. Many thanks.

Considering we're half way through 2016, when are you going? Mind you, I never book more than a week or two in advance.

School hols in both N.Ireland and R.o.I. are the whole of July and August and that will probably affect the cost of hire.

I am wondering if the OP really meant 2016?

2017 Laughing.  Much too soon to even think about it.  Enjoy 2016 and think about it over the dark days of winter.
