I've noticed that very few motorhome drivers/passengers give a friendly wave to fellow motorhomers when travelling. Is this a thing of of the past ?

It sure is as far as I'm concerned. I look at the road and keep my hands on the wheel. Sorry to disappoint.

We find it's patchy. We tend to wave but don't always see vans. As passenger I often miss vans because I'm doing something other than lookng at the road.

In the 60's and early 70's in France all GB cars used to wave at each other. It soon died out as GB number plates became too common.  So I suspect its the same for motor homes, just too common now.

When we first took up caranning, back in 1980, caravanners always seemed to wave to each other on passing and it was nice to take the new MH out for the first time and see that the greeting is still shared.  So yes, if I see a MH and it is safe to do so I wave.

The only time we have been waved at is when we have left something open on the van, or in one case when the 7 /13 pin connector had drooped onto the road. I think in this day and age it is best reserved for these eventualities.

thing is, if youre in a MH and someone waves to you, youre likely to think its a happy wave, not a problem wave....

i was in the car the other day and a MH came towards me and he had a rear locker door wide open.....by the time i got my hand up to signal a warning, he was on his way probably telling his OH that 'the nice chap had just waved to them'....Undecided

We always wave and mostly receive a wave back. It seems from our experience that owners of certain makes of A-Class are the least likely to return a friendly wave.

It is thankfully dying out. ---When we had the Motorhome, I thought it was a bit naff to wave to every big white van we passed. So I stopped doing it and I noticed that others stopped as well.  Our attention should be on our driving. The only time a hand gesture is beneficial is to warn any on coming vehicles of danger.

The only people who genuinely greet each other by a hand gesture are Bikers but their hands never leave the hand grips to do so.

    K Cool .

Thank you all for your interesting comments. When safe to do so I shall continue to wave as some have not totally stopped waving to others. I personally would regard someone flashing their lights as a warning of a problem. Regarding bikers greeting each
other - I have only noticed them nod their heads.

Foreign motorcyclists just seem to stick their leg out - is that a greeting or cramp!   Undecided

I'm sorry, I just don't understand the desire to wave to strangers (with whom you may have nothing in common apart from your type of holiday). It's not being "friendly" - being friendly is interacting face to face.

Sorry! Just my opinion: Carry on Waving.

Autosleeper owners have there own forum Goldie, so sometimes owners do chat, plus sometimes you wave and find that the people you wave to are on same site, so chance to say hello, but obviously most of time it is acknowledging a stranger. Same with a lot
of shared interest groups though, classic car drivers wave to us if we are out in ours.

That raises the other question. Should A-Class drivers wave to coachbuilt and should coachbuilt wave to PVC?LaughingLaughing

Waving is alive and kicking over here, the French love it. The Bailey Motorhomes have a group too so they always wave if you have one.
