Paying for new caravan

We collect our brand new caravan next week. In the past when buying cars or caravans we have always paid by switch with no problems. Husband spoke with salesman from (reputable) dealer today and it was suggested that we do bank transfer a couple of days
prior as they had had issues with some high value machine payments taking a while to go through or not going through at all. Is is just me that thinks this is a bit funny? We have traded in and we have a large sum we were going to pay switch and then the rest
on a credit card. How do other people pay the difference?

Visa Debit . Just paid for a New MH with one. Dealer very happy. Also get protection from Visa.

There is a useful table here:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/visa-mastercard-chargeback

Always a good idea to put at least £100 on the credit card

They do try this but like you, Fifth, I'm not happy parting with my money until I see the goods. We refused to pay in advance when we bought our MH - the company might have become insolvent between paying and delivery plus the van may not have been ready
    with  all the jobs done.

Having paid the deposit by credit card we opted to pay the balance by bank transfer which we arranged by phone in the dealership after we'd inspected the van. Within 20 minutes the money was in their account.

We have traded in our current van and we were looking to put £800 on the credit card and pay just under half the purchase price of the van by debit card but they say high value amounts don't always work by debit Machine but just sounds fishy. Will speak
to bank tomorrow for advice. My husband thought bank transfer was fine until i said I thought it was a bit suspicious!

I would use a debit card on the day avoiding handing over any cash in advance.  If you have to pay for anything in advance then make sure the funds only go to a protected client account in case the company goes bust in the meantime.

The bank is the best place for advice, Fifth. I have used a debit card before for large amounts but found it a faff having the payment delayed for a few minutes while texts went to and fro the bank as I tried to convince them it was really me.

I have paid for two vans and several cars using a debit card on the day. I have always informed the bank before hand about the amount and date / time of transaction. On some occasions the machine has given a code telling the dealer to ring a number and I
have had to answer security questions, other times it has gone through without. Never had any trouble with the dealers using this method, in fact the caravan dealer suggested it. I certainly would not pay more than the deposit upfront and this can be done
on a credit card for added protection.

The first thing to do is pay some of the price on a credit card, this will give you added protection if things go wrong.  We paid the deposit with CC then paid the balance with a debit card the day we picked up the van.  I wouldn't pay in advance, what if
they went into administration the day before you picked the van up?  The cycnic in me always wins out!

i paid the deposit (£500) by credit card and then the balance on the pickup day by Visa debit ,card went straight through with no problems

you need to phone your card provider about the payment and not your bank , i went in to my bank to tell them i would make a large payment and they told me to speak to the card provider, this was 2 months ago

Dont part with the balance until you are totally sure the van is as good as you expected.

Witholding/refusing payment is the best stimuli to the dealer to rectify any faults you find & TAKE time to really give it the once over.

Recently paid £17k using a debit card - went into the bank to warn them of the transaction (Halifax) to ensure smooth transition of the money and was told there was no need to inform them. I wasn't particularly happy as I said that amounts on the card are
usually under £100 say and wouldn't an amount like this seem unusual and wouldn't warning bells go off somewhere? 'No sir' ....! Needless to say it went straight through.

Certainly wouldn't pay until the day and I had seen and gone through the handover.

When we bought our current caravan, we wanted to pay with a Building Society cheque, but the dealer wanted it to be by Debit Card. So we had to faff about transferring money to the bank account.

M&S Mastercard everytime for us - her-in-doors can then spend lots of bonus points in their store! Of course we always have the funds ready to transfer from the bank at the end of the month

i did a far lager sum using a debit card, after a small deposit on the credit card.

i did contact the bank to keep them in the loop...they came up with some bunkum about £15k per transaction and do it in several goes, in the end it went through first time on a single transaction, so i dont think even they know what they're on aboutUndecided

When I bought the last car they said we could pay how we liked, but a debit card was much preferred. The problem is these days is that it is all too easy to forge things like building society cheques so they have to make phone calls for authentication, which takes even more time. Especially if your picking it up on an evening and the branch has closed.

We used a credit car for the deposit, then debit card after checking and accepting the caravan.

Cheques can be withdrawn after 'clearing' up to 2 weeks apparently, so understand why sellers don't like them. We learned this when selling the MH before paying for the caravan. You live and learn. Tongue Out

If your worried phone the bank before hand.  There is no reason for it not to go through if the money is there.

I personally always use a credit card and debit card.  Get a new interest free credit card just before a big purchase and put as much on it as I can - usually manage about £5k limit.  Garage/company will usually say they are going to charge me.  I then threaten
to walk away having paid the deposit on credit card and denying being told about any additiona fees (whcih is the case).  Have always been able to pay by credit card in the end. Interest free for 18month or two years, money in a savings account.

Just one point to consider is don't transfer the cash into your current account too early (just in case it gets hacked).  As I have internet banking when I got to the dealer I transferred the cash from my savings account to my current account then after
the handover paid the dealer by debit card, all done in a flash

Paying in advance risks the dealer going bust and you losing your money so I would not do it. The risk is small but there. Switch and credit cards are safer or even a bankers draft if you  can still get one.

Husband was at bank today swapping money about and told the girl our concerns, and he was told that if we transferred the money through our internet banking and something went wrong then the bank would refund our money back and they would pursue the company!
I was very surprised at this.
