A plea to remember your mirrors

We have spent the last few weeks in the North West Highlands and like most of the UK the roads are in a terrible state. Particularly the edges, which often drop away into deep holes. This is particularly problematical on the narrower twin track A roads,
when everyone wants to be as close to the white line as they can. Unfortunately when a motorhome is near the white line its mirror can be on my side. It has been very close on occasion but fortunately no contact.

Just been to the Highlands for 3 weeks in our 2.35cm wide + 40cms for wing mirrors motorhome so I understand Steve's point. Our wing mirrors are coach mirrors so are higher than cars and vans but not lorries. The worst road was the A82 at the top end of Loch Lomond - before you get to the Highlands - because it was busy with large coaches and heavy lorries.

Throughout our tour, we just slowed down, to a stop when necessary, and were courteous to other drivers. Fortunately our van is only 6m long so getting past in tight areas was easier than a car/caravan combo or long motorhome. Easiest roads were the quiet ones with passing places.

Agree, coaches and MHs are the worst offenders.

We lost an extended mirror to a coach in Norway, he was well over the line, and it wasn't a narrow road.

Then we lost one to a coach near Killin, that was a narrow road.

A MH in the Lakes missed our mirrors but when passing on a bend, slowly, we were stopped, scraped HIS mirror right along the caravan, which we did not know till we reached our site.

He must  have known yet obviously made no effort to fold in his mirror.  The resulting line of black rubber was able to be removed from the paintwork of the van, but we still have the deep scores on the windows.

Caution is needed on narrow roads and you just have to hope the other drivers are as cautious. The A82 has been mentioned on here before by others as well as me and to my mind is best avoided.

Coach drivers seem to be the worst offenders and Lochs and Glens seem to have more near misses with us than others but timber lorries and tippers are probably the worst of the rest.

Last season, just North of Lochearnhead we passed a motorhome who scraped his mirror down the side of our van. It was a couple of miles further on before we could pull in to discover the rearmost window smashed! A £1000+ insurance claim!
