Supermarket or Branded Diesel ?
I'm certain this has been covered in the past so my apologies if so. Does anyone have any real experience with differences between the supermarket fuel and branded fuels. Not just superstition or thoughts but actual tests carried out by themselves. And what
about the use of the " Premium " premium brands. Shell V Power etc.etc . How do they effect the running of a modern diesel engine pulling or lugging around a heavy load. Your actual experiences would be very interesting.

None of us have the scientific/ technical equipment to carry out detailed and accurate tests of different fuels under identical loadings, weather conditions and driving styles - but it won't stop the motor heads giving you their opinions.

I have a jaguar x type diesel auto and tow using supermarket fuel most of the time but I do put an injector cleaner in periodically. Sorry no hard evidence to support my claims that the car drives better but I am sure it does!!

But the clue is in the name ... that's what Jasper does for a living ... not sure what Frank does

Hello again. YOU SEE ! Just mention fuel and I am off on a new rant.
I have read all the above posts with reference to deisel and the possible better performances of certain deisels.
Yes well..........
Try running your vehicle of fresh air as the fuel is sitting in the wrong tank. THEN you'll just be SO delighted with any fuel in the RIGHT tank.
We were just so puzzled as to why the fuel gauge stayed put on nearly empty after loading up £60 worth of fuel.
The VERY sad thing is.................
I was so annoyed when I thought our fuel gauge was just broken.I bitched, griped and grumped about it for an hour.
Imagine that. Little did I know.................
However, I must say that in a clear container water under deisel which has just been drained from the fresh water tank really sparkles and is quite pretty.I was quite the optimist for 10 minutes.
Drain that for 3 hours and see how chirpy you are.

,I've just been given 150 Ltr's of central heating gas oil for boatyard use !! Just HOW does that rate in octane/running tests
in a diesel engine ?? If 'chip fat runs ??? well then ,so should a diesel 'genny' ,should'nt it ?? !! .0 -
Mr Samb, there's a long discussion on this subject on Pg 3 of the Towcars-towing section, see link below.

One issue with fuelling is that if filling a tank when you have been running on fumes is the disturbance of any crud in the bottom of the tank which could lead to irregularity in performance.

This is where my belief of S/mkt fuel better or worse has issues-the vehicle is driven over a regular distance Monday with clear roads & good speeds, Tuesday I hit a traffic log jam due to a broken down truck, the traffic is slow & no decent speeds. The
fuel used will be greater on Tues than Mon. So how can i then have a reliable theory that any fuel is better than the other?, the tests done really do need to be on a rolling road in reliable/identical conditions. Getting a couple of MPG better out of one
than the other cant be reliable under normal driving conditions. Professor R2B rests His case0 -
Thank you all. I wonder if there are any tanker drivers out there who can confirm if the same fuel and additives are delivered to both. You hear so many conflicting reports. Bit like the " in " or " out " campaign. You don't just know who to believe.

Your actual experiences would be very interesting. The base fuel is undeniably the exact same - there's only a handful of fuel refineries in the UK, and they supply all of our filling stations.
What the vendors do once the base fuel is delivered is what we can debate.
Do they have good storage tanks - Good filters - what additives do they put in.
That's what might make a difference.
Supermarket fuel can't be bad - a huge number of people buy it every day, and you hear of a very small number of people having problems - and how do we even know those cars are well-looked-after in terms of servicing etc?

This may help, a "Fifth Gear" test.....
with Vicky Butler Henderson to make it interesting,,,,,!!

DD, I think the interesting thing was that other than the odd result the outcome (power output in this case) was pretty much the same give or take the odd horsepower, whichever fuel was used.
When I was doing my engineering course we did the same experiment over & over in the same conditions, each time the result would come out very slightly different, the "experimental error"
This looks much the same to me, and I doubt the result would be very different if it were diesel or petrol.
I guess those that swear by supermarket or expensive branded fuel will see something in it that justifies their particular choice......
Personally I always go for branded fuel where its readily available for my cars & MH because if theres even a chance its better I would pay the difference. In the overall scheme of what Ive paid for my vehicles its piddling in the wind....
But I appreciate many others dont think like that.....

Useful having it here though Nellie as it affects MHs as well as cars.
Just wish that some-one more au fait with data would make the link active, DD

Probably about the same difference as bottled or tap water.

I was warned about supermarket diesel in Spain, l think the issue is the fact that many vehicles are parked for months on end and as fuel evaporates it leaves a sticky residue. Just a theory as I've not had issues with supermarket fuel.

Does that happen with diesel? I have had that gummy deposit problem with petrol left long term in yacht fuel tanks.

For anybody who still believes that there is a difference just drive into any BP garage and see what they say about their very costly "Ultimate" fuel (Or check their Internet site). To paraphrase, if your engine/injectors are dirty you might see an improvement
in fuel consumption which roughly equates to the additional price per litre of Ultimate on the basis that the additives in the superior blend may clean your engine over an extended period.Convinced? No, nor was I.
