Traverse beds pros and cons

Hi

We have recently taken up caravanning after years of owning a static.  We have a Eldiss Crusader Aurora which has plenty of room but due to my arthritis I am struggling to  climb on the fixed side bed and to access the lockers above the bed.  Is there any
traverse bed owners out there who could offer their views on a traverse bed layouts.  I am particularly intersted in the storage and the size of the lounge/kitchen from an owners point of view.

Thanks N10Shirley

From a size perspective we onwed a french side bed and travers bedded SWIFT Challenger and the size of th elounge, kitchen etc. were the same.  We got fed up having t climb over the other person to get out for the loo at night or get up earlier in the morning
so found the travese bed a lot better.  They push back during the day allowing better movement around teh bed and at night its just a case of squeeezing past (best to do it with your back to the bed rather than the window so your bum does not catch on the
blind!) Storage under the bed is the same if not better, overall it was just so much better.

Just bought a new caravan with single beds.

No climbing over each other to get up or visit the toilet.

No squeezing round the bottom of the bed.

So much storage we can't fill the cupboards.

Totally agree here, we've had all types of beds in vans, give me the single beds everytime. Easy to make up you can reach the overhead lockers without stretching and no loss of covers during the night when OH turns overWink and of course no having to climb over each other.  Another good thing is you can even have differant weight duvets so if you're a hottie or a coldie you have what suits you.Laughing

We have a m/h with a high fixed side bed and the better half has arthritis and uses a small folding stool to help getting on the bed when she is having a bad day.

I can't imagine a 'transverse' double much different to a side double with regard to acessing the loo during the night.  From the examples I have seen, once the bed has been pulled out for use at night, there is insufficient room for the person on the opposite
side to get around the bottom of the bed in order to get to the loo.  I'd be interested in comments about this from those who have this layout.

I have a transverse bed in my Swift  and have to say much prefer it to the previous fixed side bed. There is no discernible difference in lounge sizes, access under the bed is better and squeezing past the foot of the bed at night foes not present a problem!

An added bonus is the huge amount of extra wardrobe space and bedside shelves on each side for that early morning cups!

Try an Adria, the 2.5m wide body gives a very spacious layout, albeit can be a touch heavy and was too wide for us when parking at home. In the end we have gone for a side/French bed layout (Quattro EW) with a decent kitchen and lounge plus sepearate dining
area. the issue of squeezing past the end of a transverse bed, transverse beds generally too short, and those with decent lounge/kitchen were all too heavy requiring a change of car All mitigated against an island bed for us.

I agree. Unless you go for a 2.5m wide caravan there is little advantage in a transverse bed arrangement.

We started with a 2 berth ABI Dalesman , lovely van , but making the bed was a pain . We looked over the years and seen a fixed side bed , it looked nice and no bed to make up each night , We seen a transverse bed van and thought lovely , but most have an
end washroom and then when I was working shifts , the wife would have disturbed Me if I was on night shift .  We then looked at an end island bed and went for that as We like the mid placed wash and toilet facilities as if one is up early the other isn't disturbed
and if one goes to bed early , each can watch thier own programmes on TV . It is very subjective and personal as others have pointed out and only through research will You find the correct bed and layout . Apologies for the long post as I am sitting on a 7th
floor balcony in Benidorm for 2 weeks ( wife booked holiday ) lovely weather and I am enjoying it . However I would rather be in the caravan on holiday with My little dog at My side Bliss
