Quite shocked - Insurance

(Sorry if wrong section - its the only place where caravanners and motorhomist will both be!)

As some of you may know, I recently sold my motorhome and bought a caravan

The motorhome was worth c.3x the value of the caravan.  They are roughly the same age.

I've just been looking at insurance prices, and I'm shocked to see that the caravan insurance is much higher than for the motorhome.

Even though the motorhome insurance includes all of the public liability stuff that we are told is the main cost in vehicle insurance (whiplash claims etc) - which is covered on my car insurance, not my caravan.

£150 for the motorhome, £190 for the caravan.  I thought it would have been half that.  Really surprised.

Also, quick question - can I use my motorhome NCD on the caravan (I have separate NCD on my car)

HA!  While I was typing this, I was waiting on a comparison site to come back with quotes.

If I add a hitchlock and a wheel clamp (I assume this is fairly standard stuff?), then its down to £95.  That's more like it.

The two types of insurance are not comparable but as profit margins are wafer thin and there is a lot of competition for the business you can be sure that the figures are near enough right.

You're not alone in your discovery, Peter. I've always assumed it's because caravans are so much easier to steal than MHs so the risk is greater.

Not sure if it is allowed but who is that with?  my van is stored in a gold site and is hugely more expensive than that... Like 4 time more!!  I'm not sure if because I claimed on the house insurance after a burglary my card is marked by the insurance industry!
all the quotes were around this figure so thought that was the going rate, so any suggestions you can give as to why this could be would be appriciated as its not long til my renewal

    thank you

I think it is down to the far higher theft rate of caravans. Last year there was I believe over 600. When you realise that only 20,000 to 30,000 are sold each year the odds of theft are far higher than motor vehicles. The things are very flimsy as well and
what looks like minor damage can be very expensive to repair.

I caqnnot speak for all insurers but after I damaged mine no terms were applied to the policy.

The £95 quote was via a comparison site.  I don't wan to name them, as they sent my registration details back to me via email including my actual password (in plaintext) which is a terrible idea!

So following the comparison quotes, I called Adrian Flux, who I've used on and off over the last decade (had my last MH policy with them).

Quoted me for Aviva at £91.  I almost ripped her hand off.

    Happy days.

Although what our club's insurance was playing at by asking over double, who knows??!!

I have had insurance through Adrian Flux and very competitive they were to.  Their policy was equivalent to CC but a great deal cheaper.  There is a possible down side and that is they are regulated in Malta and not the UK, so for our new van we didn't want
    to take a risk.

Remember, Adrian Flux are only the Insurance Broker - once they have sold you a policy, that policy is between you and the company who you bought from - in my case today, it was Aviva.

Edit: I think they do their own policies too, so that could be different.  Although they'd have to comply with UK/EU law of course

why didn't I think of them!!

I insure both my car and our classic car with them and it just didn't occur to me... What an idiot I am  Thanks for the tip, I'll make a call to them tomorrow

I try to avoid comparison websites as used one when umming and aching about what new car to get a couple of years ago and when researching the cost of insurance they credit searched me for every enquiry I made, which killed my credit rating just at the time
I needed it to be spotless. I got it sorted though expirian but if I'd not been signed up to them I'd never have realised why the interest rate quoted had suddenly jumped from fair to 25 percent in a couple of weeks!!  I believe they can't do this anymore,
but it kinda put me off

The occasional search on your credit file is actually a GOOD thing.

Having no searches in the previous year, for some stupid reason, is a red flag!

    Crazy or what!!??

Noddle is a free site for checking your credit file, if you're interested.  Experian is a one month free trial, if its still the same as last time I used that place.

I was with Adrain Flux 2 years ago and had been with them for 6 years and found them very good. I phoned them to inform them that I had moved house and recieved a text a few hours later saying my Insurance would finish in 14 days.  Phoned again, They did
not  cover that Postal Area and I wasn,t entitled to a rebate for the 2months left on the Insurance, had to be at 3 months or more. They did offer me another Insurance Policy at nearly twice the price. Needless to say they lost my custom.

I did lookl at the website and could not find the policy wording but doubt it matches the clubs which beats any I have seen except the C&CC. It also does not show it as having Defacxto five star rating. It may have this but those who do broadcast it. If
it has not then it does not match the market leaders.

Adrian Flux are brokers and can put your business with various companies. They appear however to run it as a scheme which would mean like some others you get their wording and not the insurers. This is not neccessarily bad as it depends if they have been
able to add cover for the same price or have cut it to gey the price down.

If you have a Braclaycard (and maybe other BC products), they offer free credit score checking from Experian, so you don't have to get involved with a monthly trial and having to extricate yourself at the end.
